Shocking footage of a 1M being stolen in just 3 minutes

This is startling.

The thieves used a device that plugged into the car’s On-Board Diagnostic (ODB) port to program a new unlocking code.

First they deactivated the car’s sensor. Then they broke the driver’s window. The internal ultrasonic sensor system has a “blind spot” just in front of the OBD port. The OBD port remained powered up, even when the car was off. The OBD port did not require a password. It is clear that they can get full access without entering the car.

Apparently, though unconfirmed, BMW has acknowledged the security flaw.

The problem is, the sort of criminals that steal this type of car, are organised gangs, and the cars are shipped out of the country to be sold.
Even if the car was made impossible to steal, if the car is parked on your drive, they know the keys are in the house, and for these people it's not such a big jump to enter the house and get them.
Quite scary really.

Horrible to watch. Their blatant approach makes my blood boil.

I feel keeping the car out of sight where possible helps. Of course we all know that if they really want your car they'll get it somehow, no matter what you've done to protect it.

Thankfully high end car theft is nowhere as big a problem here as it is in Europe. Supply and demand. Not so easy to get a car from Australia to an offshore buyer.

time to install a good old fashioned secret kill switch i rckon, my dad had one on the 12v going to the coil, stopped the van being stolen twice if I recall.... Always thought BMW's chip in key system was fool proof... clearly not! i guess thieves with this kind of kit will only target brand new high end models

I don't understand the point of the keyless fob anyway ... you still need to carry it with you, ... I think you still need to insert it into a slot (is that still correct ?) ... and the absence of a physical key means it is subject to software copy /replication as above.

Solution: use a physical key again
