Shimmy Damper broken ?

Hi ,

Looking for some advice.

Car just been in for an inspection on the ramp and the mechanic took these photos saying it is the shimmy damper. I don't know much about these, any thoughts? Do at a BMW or an indy ok?

Also they said this belt? needs replacing??

Car has done 25k miles, 2013, on some pot holed roads . :headbang:

Thanks

It’s always a good idea to change the belt as it could potentially cause serious damage, it also looks like the damper is leaking so also needs replacing, if they’re adaptive then it’s going to be expensive, you could consider getting them refurbished if you’re got the adaptive suspension, others have fitted aftermarket springs and dampers, BMW will have your pants down so I would go to an independent garage

Agree with Chippie. Spring and belt are easy (and not expensive). However, if adaptive, damper - whether through AD or indy - is a chunk of money.

(I think that abandoning adaptive suspension altogether because the dampers are expensive is nonsense. A case of 'If you can't afford the parts, sir, don't buy the car' - as an Aston Martin dealer said to me. {I didn't buy the car. :) } )

Whatever, you need all three.

OK thanks very much for the advice. I just checked through https://www.mdecoder.com that I don't have the adaptive suspension option.

The BMW dealer is quoting £1187 for the 2 damper replacements !

Thinking of buying the parts myself and taking it to an Indy?? Parts needed are? From https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=LL31-EUR-06-2013-E89-BMW-Z4_20i&diagId=31_0850 31316784917 Left front spring strut and 31316784918 Front right spring strut right? And a Hex bolt with washer 3332676034, Self-locking collar nut 33326760668. New Springs needed also? Aftermarket ones or original best?

And BMW dealer quoting £45 for the belt replacement. From the pic just seems a little discolouration on one edge.

Thanks.

You can upgrade all the springs and all the shock absorbers for around £750 plus fitting (around £225 at indy).
The upgrade will transform your car, more comfortable, a lot better handling and a few mm lower so it looks better as well.

Thanks Mcbutler for the recommend , but the car is actually in China and the roads are so potholed and constant road construction I wouldn’t want to drop it any lower, think I’ll just pick up some lower cost ones here in the U.K., and take them back with me when I can actually get back in the country !

OEM ones best or any other brands “spring” to mind?
