It is, fitted an extra cigarette lighter socket switched through the ignition to feed a dash cam. The idea was to fit and forget and not to have to remember to disconnect when engine not running ('cos fitted cigarette lighter is permanently live).
I drilled a suitable sized hole in the under dash panel, item 3 in the diagram below.
I also had an aux in fitted with a 3.5mm jack to connect to iphone. I bought a 3.5mm jack and socket from Maplins (about £4). Cut the aux lead so I had a short length of lead with a jack on one end and fitted a second jack, ran the end of the aux lead connected to the head unit through a suitable second hole in the panel and fitted the socket.
I then fitted the cigarette lighter socket (about £3 from ebay) to the panel (more on this later) and ran the wires through to the fuse box. I connected the earth wire to a suitable point, fitted an in-line 5amp fuse (about £2 ebay) to the live supply and then connected that to a spare unused fuse on the fuse panel which was switched via the ignition, I think it was fuse 41 from memory. Total cost about £10, dont spend $60 to do the same job.
Only downside was where I positioned the new cigarette lighter, there wasnt sufficient clearance for a normal USB type plug and USB lead so had to use the low profile one, which I had anyway, and the up angle USB converter. If I had fitted closer to the end of the panel there would have been sufficient clearance to use standard plug and cable.
