what do you need to turn off to get it to loose traction like that?

i did a fake autotest in the westy (a local guy found a warehouse carpark that let us dick about with cones to make a course) and it was loads of fun. well worth having a go at if you can
 
In an M just press the DSC button once ; in any other e85/86 press and hold it until the warning triangle comes up on the dash. In both cases all electronic assistance is then as off as it gets. Not sure about what you do in an e89...
