in coffins, it's about time they all came back, a war that cannot be won

We lost a couple last week as well, for what? IMO we should get out, seal the borders and let them rot. The whole place isn't worth one of our soldiers lives lost.

I think we either have to get out or start to play hardball. Our guys have too many rules to be able to do the job they need to do over there. :x :x

I'm not anti-war, or anti-army, but if I'd actually gone down the military route I wanted when I left school (avionics technican or ammunitions technician) then I'd be mightily pissed off with my government for getting me into that situation.

I'd hoped that the UK and US would have learnt lessons from Vietnam and other guerilla wars where they either kill everything on the ground, or just leave it be :headbang:

That's the trouble, we are fighting a war with one hand tied behind our back we should not bother if someone has been tortured or mistreated, it's nothing like as bad as the other side do.
we beat ourselves up to much, we should have the ball's to finish it hard which I'm sure our brave lad's want to do.

But "finishing it hard" doesn't actually finish it - Instead it makes it much worse.

The problem we've got is we shouldn't have gone in in the first place as we did.
Instead, we should have gone in covert and dealt with it as quietly as possible.
Now, we're in a catch22 situation where if:
a: We pull out - The Taliban and Osama Bin Liner will hail it as their victory and gain more support for their cause
b: We go in hard - The Taliban and Osama Bin Liner will scream and shout about the senseless murder of innocents by the evil west, again
gaining more support for their cause.

All we can hope for now is someone locates Osama and we kick the crap out of him and the other ring leaders once and for all.

It really is awful that we're loosing our troops, and I truly feel for the friends and families of those who've lost a loved one.
But the number we've lost in nine years of conflict (309) isn't exactly a massive amount (1 man every 2 weeks) when you compare it to other conflicts we've fought in (258 lost during the Falkland Islands conflict - 49 every 2 weeks).

We have to remember this war, whilst it now doesn't really benefit the British peoples, it can offer a great deal to the people of Afghanistan, and maybe improve the west's relations with at least one middle-eastern country. It may even reduce the threat of terrorism against us - which has to be a good thing.

Also, if we didn't have the red tape our troops have to deal with nowadays, what's stopping a re-occurrence of the atrocities we've seen in other conflicts? In the heat of battle, I'm sure it's very easy for anger and vengeance to seep it's way in, especially considering the length of this conflict.

For sure, it'd be easier to "win" without all that tape, but it would mean that all those lives lost (on both sides) would have been for nothing imo.
Two wrongs don't make a right ;)

To be honest, I much prefer to think of our armed forces as the best and most respectable fighting force in the world.

But, with all that said and done, I really feel sorry for our boys, as they're fighting a war that shouldn't have got this far.

well said sk93.

when mentioning past wars don't forget the thousands of men lost (sometimes in one day) during the first and second world wars.

Here's the reason for that occupation!

And with car manufacturers going more towards electric motors, this could be even more relevant!

I have to admit. When I've heard about the war and soldiers getting killed in the news, that's all it's been - news. Hear it/read about it and then forget about it. That is until a couple of weeks ago, when a lad I went to school with was killed by a bomb in Afghanistan. His girlfriend who is the sister of one of my good friends is pregnant with their first child and is due in September. It's awful.

I now realise what they do out there and for that I applaud them.

RIP.

And so it goes on, looks like the death toll is getting worse, poor poor lad's
