Sessanta to Supersport - anyone done it?

Just done my first real drive on the Michelin SS after years with the Vreds and my first impression wasn't as good as I was hoping/expecting. There was nothing wrong really, but was expecting to be blown away by the change. Maybe I've underestimated just how good the Vreds were.

The SS felt softer than the Vreds, maybe I need to up the pressures to firm them up a bit. Was running 30F, 32R with the Sessantas and have gone with the same with Michelins, maybe I should go 32F, 34R and see if they improve.

On a side note the rim protection seems to better on the Vreds too.

Anyone done a similar change?

Ive switched a good few tyres along the way  & you've mirrored my own thoughts .
I do think the Michelins earn their money from 6mm to 3mm where many start to show failings but to my mind the Vreds are as close to Michelin as you will get without spending Michelin £
To my mind I would list my top 4 NEW tyres in order & no surprise that it will also reflect their costs / approx. cost on a set of staggered 18s
1 ) Michelin £450
2) Vredestein £400
3) Hankook £350
4) Uniroyal RS3 £300

I have run many part worn Pirelli , Dunlop Sport Maxx , Goodyear F1s , Continental & these are all decent but if buying new I would choose from the above 4 , partworn I am happy to "put up" with any of the above 8

I may have 4 part worn Vreds available soon

:P :P :P

:D

What tyres have you been using before the Vreds? Be interested to know the change from your point of view as well.

Where are you finding a set of Michelin Pilot Supersports for £450?

Eagle F1s. tdh, I've not had much experience of either only done 300 miles in the car so far and only 2 of them on the vreds!

However compared to the runflats on my previous E89 (19 inch rims) the ride is much more compliant with no lack of grip.

Taking the Z to work tomorrow (suns out I believe and will be taking the long way home) so may have more info then.

cheers

I've been fortunate enough to share and drive an atom 2 around the nordschleife on a regular basis for 4 years and we always ran on Toyo Proxes semi-slicks. This was the benchmark as far as i was concerned.
I've owned and driven an E46 M3 around the ring too, on vred sessantas. It's been my go-to tyre for that and all subsequent cars i've owned and will be the next non-winter tyre choice for my recently purchased z.
I've ran pirelli p-zero's previously, a much respected tyre. But there is something about the vreds that always brings me back. Maybe its the performance to price ratio, the progressive nature of when they let go, the quietness, the wet weather performance. Who knows. But for now, I'll be speccing the vreds for all my road cars...
Hope my opinion helps.

I'd like to know that too... Pretty sure that's about £300 short of every time I have looked at them.

Was generalising the prices to highlight roughly the price gaps , not specific costs but as you asked 2 fronts at £87 & 2 rears at £124 is around £425

Ah, pilot sports, OK. Makes sense. But Flimper was talking about pilot super sports - that's what caused the confusion.

I use Hankooks on mine, great value, last pretty well and very good in the wet.

Never had a problem with Sport 3s & again was just generalising . I doubt 99% of users would find them inadequate
M sizes also available around £460 on a set for the PS3 or PS4 which some folks online are saying out perform even the SS :?

I changed from Vred Ultrac Vorti to Michelin PS4's .There a close match but I prefer the PS4's just seem more in tune with car and road. Never tried super sports but likewise have heard ps4's are easily as good.

I'm very happy with the Vred's I fitted on the wheels I got from you Mr Wilks
Probably about half worn now and still drive excellent :D

Never tried the Vreds, just went straight from Michelin PS2 on CSLs to Continental M3 on 224Ms then to Michelin PS2 on 224Ms for a year and then to PSS when they came out.

My view might be slightly biased as I've got slightly wider 265/40r18 rears as that's the only size I could get to fit at the time - and have never bothered going back to 255.

Not Supersports though :poke:

Sacrilege I know, but I am missing the Vreds :(

I don't think the soft sidewall is suiting me, that inital "are they going to grip?" uncertainty before they stick like s*** to a blanket is difficult to get used to :D

I don't really like the tyre to move about the rim, is this a sign of my poor driving ability/style?

Do all the top tyres have a soft sidewall? Might be Sessantas next time if so...

Edit: Find the PSS take longer to get up to temperature and I have to be very careful until they have. Also, they seem to be noisier than the Sessanta.

Noticed the fronts are 92 and the rears 99, would there be any noticeable difference if the fronts were 95?

What? Psi?
Just go by spec pressures. Someone took a lot of time and got sore fingers fiddling with a sliderule to work out those specs....

No not PSI! 92 and 99 are the load index's of the tyre.

Flimper, I doubt they make a difference, the rear tyre is just a wider tyre an can consequently carry more load, but yes a 95 load would suggest a stiffer sidewall, I can't believe it would make much difference though?
