Servicing the roof - what essential maintainance?

Hi all, new to zed ownership and wanted to know what can be done to 'maintain' the electric hood on a 2003 car. I've had mine a week but the roof motor sounds as though it is a bit strained so wondered what preventative diy you all recommend I,e. Lubricating joints ( and if so where / how etc). Or is it best to get it checked out by BMW before something lets go?

Any input greatly appreciated

Assuming youve cleared the roof drain holes, Theres not a lot you can do to be honest, other than keep using it regularly in order to prevent it seizing.

You can oil the joints you can see but thats about all really as everything that needs servicing is under the roof itself and inaccessible unless the roof comes out. Therefore you'd may as well let it die and resolve it then, unless your heading off on a special trip somewhere remote.

A new motor is about £250 but with labour £500-£600 all in. £700 at BMW.

i would yearly clean it with the autoglym kit.
I also find that if like me you have no choice on parking location under trees try to keep the area where it joins to the car clean. i find it gets crappy there
cleaning wise I wait for a dry day and hoover the roof with my garage henry and the stiff upholstery brush. then follow the instructions on the kit. i do find that using detailing tape and cut up bin bags over the bodywork and windows is a good idea and that the sprayers in the kits are usually a bit crap so have another one handy.

Good points. I was focusing on the mechanism. I forgot about the fabric side of it !! :thumbsup:
 
Buy a hardtop for the winter months or if you don't use it as a daily and have no garage get a half cover to put over it.
 
Thanks for the advice folks - bought a cover and in the process of doing the drains. Also need to fit a replacement third brake light as mine is cracked and letting water into the boot!
