Having recently bought an '09 23i privately with only 19k miles I decided to carry out an extra 'small' service to make sure everything is as it should be.
The car was serviced at around 14k so I didn't expect to find anything much to do, after all, the service indicator shows a minimum of another 16k miles before the next service is due. I've changed the oil and oil filter without any surprises and took off the air intake, expecting to see a comparatively clean filter. What I found is the original fitted filter, with 19k's worth of dirt. No problem I thought, even though I was a little disappointed, I'll order one from BMW; my local dealer showed nil stock, as did the five other dealers in the region......???? It appears the filter would have to be shipped from Germany!! :x
I could understand this if it was an unusual part, one that rarely fails, but an AIR FILTER
I phoned my local parts supplier, without much hope, but was told that 'Blueprint' (the foremost Japanese aftermarket supplier) had them in stock and could get one to them the same day. So I now have both oil and air filters fitted to my German engine supplied by my Japanese parts supplier.
I appreciate that I'm probably going to void what little warranty is left, but as I intend to keep the car for a long time I figure that carrying out extra services really can't do any harm, especially with the ridiculously long service intervals BMW (and other manufacturers.
Does anyone have any comments on this state of affairs or am I just too anal about keeping my motor in good nick?
