Service Inspection 1 or 2 or ?

My 2005 Zed has done 12,000 miles. I bought her from a dealer at 10,000 miles and they had done an oil change and brake fluide change - the only other stamp in the book was the PDI on delivery three years earlier. When starting up the display tells me I'll need an "Inspection" service in 11,000 miles time.

Is there only one type of Inspection - I thought there was a 1 and 2, presuming an increasing level of work and expense between the two. I guess that at 23,000 it will be an Inspection 1 but why is the display non-specific - is that normal? :?

Do a search, several threads on this lately. Inspection 1 at 30K miles, 2 at 60K miles, oilchange every 15K miles.

I believe the oil is every 2 years regardless of milage. Unless it has already been done sooner in an inspection service.

If you drive like a saint then a service can be 2yrs apart and maybe 25k miles (ie, long motorway journeys almost all the time)

But I *think* insp1/2 are almost forced/done by the dealers at about 30k/60k anyway due to mileage...

Personally I have NO idea why BMW didn't program in time to the service indicators as well as mileage, as you can run over the two years without issue! Doh! Not good for owners who don't read manuals and slack dealers.

The service intervals are calculated by fuel useage - period.

Right, but at 2 years they are supposed to be forced...?!
If you do non-stop motorway driving it's probably easy to get to 25,000 miles before 2 years is up, so having a 25k mileage and 24 month service intervals I would think is entirely possible for some?

Not sure why you would have a Z4 to do that though :)

It's 15K OR 2 years oil service intervals in Europe (15K or 1 year here in the US). The other stuff (changing cabin air filters, etc) is done with the mileage indicator.

Ah, so they can never go over 15k miles between an oil service then?

So it's 15k or two years no matter what, whichever is sooner?

Dave

Yep. Had my oil changed in September (had it a year) but didn't trip the indicator until almost 20K a couple weeks ago. They called the September oil change something like short interval but didn't reset the "clock" . I had to wait until the indicator was down to 1000 miles to schedule the appointment to change the cabin air filter. I guess BMW is watching that more closely now.

Oh...

Hmmm,

Just the car I'm picking up on Saturday was:

New 0k (june04)
......14k/14mnth gap
Oil 14k (aug05)
......16k/18mnth gap
Insp1 32k (feb07)
......29k/22mnth gap
Insp2 59k (dec08)

I had it seems, foolishly assumed that it was any mileage at all that the computer would allow, or two years. I had no idea that the computer would never allow over 15k miles anyway!

I think I will be writing a buyers guide for UK owners because that, imho, is a hugely important piece of information when reviewing the history... even BMW's book doesn't mention it will never be over 15k miles! (and another reason why it's so stupid, because even BMW will let it go over 2 years themselves)... so open to abuse/interpretation/mis-interpretation or just plain ignorance. I've never known a more complex service history to follow and understand :)

Oh, the computer WILL allow over 15K depending on how you drive and under what conditions. If you drive as "average" it could be quite a bit more than 15K, if you thrash it around, it will count down quicker. The time interval is to make sure the oil is changed within spec.

Change the oil per the indicator OR every 2 years, whichever comes first. You can always change the oil more often, just don't let them reset the indicator or you'll miss out on things like the cabin air filter change and the inspections.

In Z4's - Service intervals are completely calculated by fuel used - nothing else. The BMW annual or semi-annual changes/services should be managed by CRM processes your Dealer engages in or you. You could drive around for years if you don't drive enough to calculate a service through fuel useage. The Dealer will do an annual oil service or time based inspection and not reset the SI if you've gone beyond the time based requirements.
