Service computer re-set

New to this forum - but also with BMWBaby with my E82.

Slight problem with my wife's E89. I changed the brake fluid some time ago soon after the warning light came on. But I forgot to reset the service indicator. It was only when the rear pads were worn and the brake warning light came on that she reminded me. I replaced the rear pads and the wear indicator. I then tried to reset the service warning lights. I tried various methods, but the warning lights returned. Is there a problem with re-setting when the warnings have been left showing for a long time?

I wrote too soon.
Replaced discs, pads, sensor and brake fluid.
Can't reset.
In fact it has jumped to -1400.
Have tried disconnecting and reconnecting sensor.
Tried with and without sensor.
Used the old sensor wires to test voltage at the socket, showing nominal 13 odd volts.
Tried disconnecting battery for 15 minutes.

Took vehicle to garage that does a lot of remapping BMW, VW etc.
They couldn't reset.
There equipment could find nothing wrong.
Stumped.
Might buy OEM sensor from dealership and try that first as I have fitted a Pagid brand.
There is another local independent to try before I commit to the local BMW dealership :(

Might be some sort of software glitch as there was nothing visually wrong with the original sensor.

From Bimmerfest:

Here you go:

1. Switch the ignition on (so that the battery, Oil and Parking brake lights are displayed) and the key is ready to start the engine - but don't actually start the car.

2. Press the odometer reset button for between 5 and 10 seconds until a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the centre appears in the top window between the clocks (where the outside temperature / time or date normally appears) - this is the "Service" icon.

3. Release the odometer button briefly and press again straight away which brings up a picture of the Brake Fluid symbol (same as the one that the i-drive shows when you look at the Service menu).

4. If you want to reset the Brake Fluid interval for another 2 years then keep holding the odometer button until the word "RESET?" appears at the bottom of the lower window.

5. Release the button briefly and push it in again and hold for about 5 - 10 seconds until the new date appears in the bottom window. You can then switch the ignition off and the new Brake Fluid date will appear in the service menu on the i-drive screen next time you switch on.

6. If you want to reset the Oil, Microfilter or Brake Pad indicators then you will need to follow the same sequence as steps 1 and 2 above, but when you get to step 3 and the brake Fluid icon appears, just release the button and press again and the next service item will appear.

7. You can continue releasing and pressing the button until the required service item icon appears for the one you want to reset. As soon as it does then hold in the button in until the word "RESET?" appears again as in step 4 above. Once the word "RESET?" has appeared, you need to release the button briefly and hold it in again for about 5 - 10 seconds until it is replaced by the new service interval figure (as per step 5 above).

Above doesn't work for my 23i E89.
Above might work on the E85.
All I get is 'Check ok'
Engine has to be running, just cycle the left stalk flip switch and bc switch.
Fluid resets are a doddle.

From elsewhere on the net it seems the answer could be to replace the front sensor at the same time.
Or use the old rear plug with it's wires joined, plugged into front socket to convince system a new front sensor is also installed. (As it may have already reached it initial wear touch point).
Reset, then refit the old front sensor.

When the warning first came up, I didn't believe the brakes were worn, so I may have tried a reset, which screwed the system up as it wasn't seeing a new, no shorting sensor at the front as well as rear.
Would be nice to leave the sensors tied back and not used.

Time will tell.

Well tried every which way with front and back sensors, still no joy.
Soon as reset clock rotates, it jumps back to now -1600.
I can see this going to the dealer!

Amend..ordered some software and a cable that may be able to hard fix the problem because I let it pass zero miles.
