Service Book

Hi folks, I've been on the look out for a 35is for about 12 months and was finally about to take the plunge now that lockdown prices seem to have calmed down a little.

Then it turned out that 'Full Service History' meant 2 years of service history and "BMW have the rest, I'll email it later".

Obviously I didn't go for that, when I asked about a service book the seller said they were never given one, I know that's the way things go now but this car is from 2013, does anyone know when service books stopped?

(also first post, whey :D)

My 2016 BMW which I bought new didn't come with a service book so it seem somewhere between 2014 and 2016 BMW stopped issuing the books.

Thanks folks, seems like the seller isn't being completely honest then.

There have been a few red flags on this one so I think I'll just steer clear... Back to the drawing board I guess.

I wouldn’t let not having a service book put me off , BMW customer services will give you a list of garages the vehicle has visited then you can either phone the garages or there are a couple of people on eBay who provide a full history report with print out for around £10
The fact the seller lied would put me off

The service book (my 2010 35iS came with one) doesn't actually tell you that much. What made me happy were the receipts for work done, which are more detailed. Like most of us, I suppose, I keep all mine, too.

No or missing service record, if that's important use it as a bargaining tool to get the price down.
Going by the BMW schedule may not be that fantastic, if it's had oil changes based on the cars computer saying when oil needs to be changed. Better to see receipts from garages that work has been done.
But if like me i do all my own maintenance and keep no receipts.
Value of these cars dropping like a stone so doesn't really matter for a keeper.

That's the bigger thing for me tbh, there have been a number of red flags and lies throughout this whole process, seller ended up being quite difficult to deal with.

I feel like based on the interactions with the seller, I'd kick myself if/when something went wrong with the car for not paying attention to the warning signs.

Still got my eye out.

There's plenty out there, the zeds are all about fun, if it feels iffy at the outset, that'll taint your ownership even if nothing goes wrong.

Just call BMW and ask them for the details or a print out. Even if the book is mnissing they will supply a fully stamped up replacement for a small fee.

Is that BMW directly, or a stealer? When I got my car from a sh1t BMW stealer in Hook, they hadn't stamped the book to reflect the oil change they had done. My local dealer wouldn't do it, as my local dealer hadn't done the oil change.

When I then had other service work done, my dealer didn't fill in the book! They did when I told them to, but initially the service lady tried to tell me they don't have service books! This is a 2011 car! So perhaps they just can't be arsed now?

Just going off slight tangent, guy today told me he took his BMW to dealer, they read the key and said who's been a naughty boy, doing 95mph.
Who knew that was recorded.

Who on earth are BMW to comment on the speed that someone drives. It could be a track, a private road or abroad on an autobahn. I’d be fuming if some jumped up punk came out with something like that. What on earth does it have to do with them?

I think, without having been there, perhaps you can give some benefit of a doubt. Depending on how it was said, could EASILY have been a good natured joke, or even an attempt to just make conversation. I bet there are some service people who are into cars and fun driving, ya know?

My 2017 has a service book and in addition, the local main dealer didn't mind printing out the complete history even though I didn't buy it from them. I don't want to think about top speed records :?
