Series Parallel - Additional Speakers

I'm going to have some BMW standard mid range speakers fitted in the door and the fitter mentioned these are fine to connect in series parallel off the tweeter.

Any thoughts on this guys? He mentioned that this would not reduce the Ohms (My concern) but the stereo will think it's pushing out music louder?

I'm not 100% on the topic. :!:

Who's doing the fitting?

My advice go somewhere else he's talking rubbish, basic Ohm's law, you will reduce the Ohm's in the circuit, if he doesn't know that what else will he do wrong.

Guy based in Maidstone - he fitted a sub a few weeks back and i'm happy with that. Enhance.

He ensured that when wiring in series parallel - it won't lower the ohms. Not sure if this is true :? but is there anyone out there that have door mid ranges retrofitted without an external amp driving them?

I think I m qualified to answer this for you as I am an electrician. There is no such thing as series parallel. its either series OR parallel. Connecting a speaker which is a resistor in itself in parallel to an existing speaker will, if both impedances are the same, half the total resistance. That is to say,for example if you had an 8 ohm speaker and connected another 8 ohm one in parallel the resistance would be 4 ohms
Its very unlikely a speaker would be wired in series because there are issues pf polarity and I have nt heard of connecting them like this. however for the record, lets say you did... then the total resistance/impedance would be the sum of the two speakers connected. As far as the stereo pushing out music louder ? well I think he is talking out of his a**e trying to blind you with science and does nt understand basic principles of ohms law... Keep away from him !

I have also heard of this being used as a "low cost" upgrade to the standard CD. Mik is spot on regarding impedence... the effect of this is that the resistance is lowered and the current drawn on the amp is raised. This could lead to overheating.

Not sure about the effect of this on sound quality... that is where is where the science stops and the subjective judgement begins. I think that the bottom line is that it depends on the speakers.

Me too and all of the above is right

Is it possible the OP has misheard the tech???

I take it you are talking about Simon from Enhance, he fiited most of my stereo upgrade, briefly I had the door mids put in by him, while I was saving up for the full blown thing, yes its fine, no drop in volume and works OK, I take it he fitted the Alpine sub behind the passenger seat, that makes a huge difference. :D he put in my amps, sub bass and composite speaker system, sounds fantastic

If you want your mind put at rest, drop me a PM,

Which Alpine sub? I bought a SWD-1600 and it looks too big to fit, thinking of ebaying and swapping for more serious kit. Got any pics ?

I've got a Type X 12" 1000 watt, powered by a mrd 1001 class d amp. total overkill and you'd laugh ifyou saw pics as i only have half a boot!
none the less will take a few snaps for ya.

weight saving is important for me so im thinking a pdx-5 if i do spend the money and subs in the oem holes, shudnt weigh much more. the swd-1600 is fairy heavy :(
