Seeing red after red -line

Hi All

In a z4 2.0 20i. I tried ending my first week of ownership by taking the car on a bit of a thrashing run. However when the car got near 6500-7000 rpm I felt a sudden loss of power until I moved from the 1st gear until 2nd. Maybe my driving skills are poor but I didn't expect any lag in that range ????

You tried taking it to the limiter before it ran out of puff?
If ur not on a dragstrip i'd suggest utilising only 2nd/3rd as ur sprint gears.

Hi, you're revving the car for the sake of it at those numbers-changing up earlier will give you harder acceleration & a longer engine life!
Look where the torque peaks on a standard 20i :wink:

Hi, you're revving the car for the sake of it at those numbers-changing up earlier will give you harder acceleration & a longer engine life!
Look where the torque peaks on a standard 20i :wink:

Ok that graph makes sense, especially the cliff edge as thats definately how it felt

Next plan of action then is to keep it then at 5000rpm as your graph suggests.

It was not purely intentional as I was in my boots and foot was planted more than I had anticipated ( making excuses now) as the exhaust note is also better in 2nd and 3rd than in first

Matters can be improved with these cars, they have exactly the same engine & turbo as the 28i-it responds very well to software fettling :wink:

The more horizontal of the two lines is the torque output, this is the force that pushes you back in the seat, the other line which peaks around 5k is the horsepower developed

Thanks for that Rob!

Indeed, contacted Unicorn Software Developments in Stockport and they asked £400 to upgrade to 270bhp. Maybe I should book my trip soon!

Your engine should be ok, it's protected by the rev-limiter from owners like you :lol:
It should be fine.

You're engine should be ok, it's protected by the rev-limiter from owners like you :lol:
