Security?

I'm fairly new to BMW/Z4 and I've come from Hondas and Type R's. I was always weary with how safe my Type R's were so always had aftermarket security alarms fitted for peace of mind.

My question is there any kind of security and if so how good is the E86 Z4 security? Is it worth having aftermarket security fitted to this car? I live in a quiet area, car tucked away at night and safe during the day etc. I have a full wheel disclock.

Also I noticed that the Z4 doors don't lock when driving like they do on newer BMW's, is it possible to retro fit a controller for this or any info on something like this?

Thanks

Mark

My doors auto lock after pulling away on my 03 plate. Maybe it's a config you (bmw dealer) can program into the key!? As far as I know mine has the standard factory alarm system.

Personally I steer clear of aftermarket alarms now after a bad experience with my mr2 when it was sat on my drive with the very loud alarm going off all day while I was on holiday in lands end (8 hours away).

Was not popular with my neighbours on my return!

All UK Z4's have a factory fitted alarm.

With regard to Auto locking when driving off, this can be coded by a main dealer, Indi or with software from fleabay (£20)

Ah brilliant, I've just read up about the key coding options so ill give that a go. My friend works for Ocean BMW so I can probably have him arrange something for me.

I take it the keys coded on these cars, i.e you need the correct key to disarm the immobiliser?

Thanks for the replies.

Both remote keys will disarm the immobiliser.

But both can be programmed to have different functions. Your friend should be able to help.

I have one key set so when I press unlock twice the drivers door windows drops to help access in tight spaces. As soon as the door is closed it raises itself.

**** Edit, just had a thought, it might be the Intravee that give the auto lock function. ****

That sounds quite handy. I've had a read through manual and there are quite a few features that can be activated or deactivated. The auto door lock and door relock if door unopened are quite appealing to me so I will have these activated and maybe a few settings.

just a note to add, I believe the z4 is somewhat of an awkward car to have an aftermarket alarm fitted to.

and the directed canbus one's don't have any software written specifically for the z4

Thanks Neil, I think the BMW security should be fine from reading up on it. My insurance were fine with it where as when I've insured other cars they have recommended I have a Thatcham alarm/imob fitted.

At the end of the day if anyone wants the car that bad they will take it.

really?

i didnt know mine had one....... so whats the easiest way to set it off? (to test!)
leaving my ipad or phone in the car used to set it off on my old car.

I think this works:

Lock with the remote, unlock with the key, get in and start flailing your arms about. It helps if you wear a hooded top.
