Just wondering what does the Classes mean on the SDHC cards and is there a benefit from having a card with a higher class. At the moment i have a 8GB SDHC class 2 but have noticed you can get a 4 & 6. Are the higher classes more for your DSLR's,at the moment i have a Panasonic Lumix TZ7 would i benefit from a higher rated card.

Many Thanks Chris :camera:

Higher class means faster write speed and the faster the camera can write the better a faster card

I believe the higher the class, the quicker the data transfer between card and device (camera/mobile etc...). You will no doubt have noticed the price increase too :(

This is taken from Wikipedia, so probably correct (but not definitely)...

The following are the ratings of some currently available cards:
Class 2: 16 Mbit/s (2 MB/s)
Class 4: 32 Mbit/s (4 MB/s)
Class 6: 48 Mbit/s (6 MB/s)
Class 10: 80 Mbit/s (10 MB/s)
That is write speed, which is what you care about.

If you plan on recording video from the camera, sometimes it's necessary for a higher speed card. On something like a continuous shooting mode it'll affect the frequency of those shots as well.

Its also worth remembering that not all manufacturers will have the same speed of cards even though they are in the same class, some will be faster than others. When I bought one for my camera Panasonic were about the fastest around, but I guess this changes all the time. It makes a noticeable difference to the amount of time between shots that you are waiting for the camera to write to the card.

Thanks for all your advice guys you have been very helpful,so off to tesco's to purchase a 8GB SDHC class 6 for £25
