Scratched glass...!

Out with my wife in her 3 series coupe. Parked to have a meal out and on return some ba***rd has scratched the rear nearside window - looks like t was done with a ring or similar. Why I ask myself :|

Search on E bay and folowing day a small kit of parts arrived, container of fluid (Cerium Oxide in solution) with a small drill pad attachment. Followed the instructions and 2 hours later the glass is as good as new :) Have now done the same on the Zed on a few small stone chips with similar excellent results.

Sorry to hear this Alan but sounds as though you got a great result in the fix kit. Do you have the ebay link? Got a few shallow scratches to the side glass on mine I'd like to sort.
 
Interesting.. I'd also like a link, more because I'd hear repairing glass was bloody difficult.

Apparently the key to this is to use a cerium oxide based compound and do it gently. The instructions were pretty good with the kit and I followed them to the letter. I used a rechargeable drill running at less than the 2.5 k revs. suggested in the instructions just to be on the safe side and removing every 30 seconds or so to stop heat build up.

As for the scratches - yes I could 'just' feel them with my finger nail. Anything really deep (stone chip etc) would not be possible. When using the supplied drill pad it tells you to use it flat over the scratch rather than concentrate just on the scratch itself, probably to level the whole area (by only a few microns I would suggest). I certainly can't notice any 'distortion' through the glass from the scratch removal.
 
Sorry to bring up an old thread but on my drive to work this morning with the low winter sun it really highlighted how scratched my windscreen is. I was struggling to see out on my drive to work yesterday so got at it with some windolene and although its much better its now highlighted all of the fine scratches. I dont want to replace the screen as apart from the scratches its in good condition.

Do these polishers really work? I don't see why not but i'm worried about getting a distorted vision. I have a monster drill that i shall not use as this sounds like its too powerful so I also have a weak B&D drill that should do the job.

what are peoples thoughts on doing this job yourself?

If it's a large area of the windscreen, I'd look at getting a quote for a professional glass polishing job

If costs any more than my £70 windscreen excess, then I'd go for (another) new screen.

Mine's not scratched, but the low sunlight does highlight the bazillion chips in it :oops:

That's one of those awkward ones, I've seen so many poorly fitted replacement screens that I'd be tempted to go for the polish even if it was, say, £50 more than a replacement screen
 
That's my concern. Id rather have my nicely fitted screen polished than risk getting a dodgy replacement. I've also heard of the sensors packing up on new screens. I might give it a go myself and if i fail call out that company.
 
Just bought one, thanks for the link. I have ring scratches in the passenger glass, pisses me of looking at it.

What sort of drill are you using?
