Scottish Road Surface the best?

Steph and I headed out further afield today to explore the Borders in particular we wanted to take a look at the A698.

Heading up the A68 is still a beautifully scenic road with some lovely sections and today we had sunshine for a third of the run up to the Borders. The Scottish part seemed to have fewer cameras than we remembered?

We ended up on some terrific roads but had travelled quite a few miles to get to them.

Passed the site of the Battle of Otterburn 1388 (That seems a heck of a long time ago! )

On the way back it was staggeringly obvious that road surfaces became more broken up and in far poorer condition once we got back into Northumberland. . . .

Why?!

Does seem vary greatly from County to County in UK. Every time I take the Zed to the SE, I think the ride is Cr#p. Then I get back to Cornwall and all is calm and controlled again.

That was just the impression I got today after returning to Northumberland from the Borders - amazing contrast.

But yeah the roads around Angus and Aberdeenshire are awesome

North Derbyshire roads are generally very good. Cross over into South Yorkshire and they are instantly dire. You can tell exactly where the border lies.

I put it down to a socialist and pretentious prioritising of resources. Meals on wheels are more important than the impression given by the county. Which I believe to be damaging to the local economy. Why would anyone want to invest in an area that has no pride in its communication links.?

Stupid.

That Scottish run looks like a nice day out.

Road surface not perfect - route more than makes up for it

I think its a case of the grass is always greener.
I have always found the roads get better when you cross the border the other way.
Although heading north once out of the cities the roads get better the further you travel.

Oh yes they are. . . . Well they are pretty bad and I can't comment on Surrey so we'll go for a draw. . . . .

I do find the further north west into Scotland the roads seem to get better and you do see lots of signs saying this part of the road improvement funded by Scotland and the EEC. I have toured up ther for 7 times in the last ten years , once in the car and the rest on the motorbike. When I went to visit relatives just north of Glasgow ( Campsie Glen) I did feel the roads were poor though .

I have driven 'down south' and the volume of traffic compared to Northumberland and Scotland is striking, so maybe we should overlook some poor road surfaces and just revel in the lack of congestion.
