Hi chaps, just wanted to get some ideas about some nice driving routes in Scotland...organising a road trip from down souf....maybe one weekend or across two days...any ideas welcome cheers.

Anywhere north if Glasgow is great and the further north you go it just gets better.
Favourites for us is past Loch Lomond head for Inveraray, straight through to Lochgilphead and then up to Oban.
A bit further and head right past Fort William and aim for Skye or further again Ullapool.
It is a fair treck for you though.

Hi Nictrix,

Ironically, the only place I have driven is north of glasgow!! It was in a Kia Picanto (brand new then) hire car. Boy that was fun. Went for a wedding in Dunblame, so drove around near sterling, Loch lomond, and doune castle! didn't have time to venture further north but the maps were looking rather pretty - so your suggestion is spot on.

It has to be the A82 for me. Glasgow to Fort William, driving past Loch Lomond and through the Great Glen. Also A830 Fort William to Mallaig-Isle of Skye road, driving past the famous Viaduct as shown in the Harry Potter train scenes, or Fort William towards Inverness, driving past Loch Ness. Not during peak tourist times though, unless you are prepared for a Formula One style procession

The old military road up through Braemar and Glenshee is awesome :driving:

It's ok I suppose :D - so many good ones - the A82 is good from tyndrum but the bottom section past Loch Lomond is not great to much tourist traffic - best roads are much further north I like the road to Mallaig

Yep, the road to Mallaig is great. Up, lunch, back down, loadsa fun :driving:

Yep Glen Coe road after a cuppa at the Green Welly,Mallaig run , over to Skye then on to Portree , Apple cross pass after Skye, :D

Anywhere in the Cairngorms and anywhere up on Wester Ross and you can't go wrong. There are other roads even better - but I keep those to myself

Thanks all some really nice places. Totally gobsmacked with Dewis recommendation - wow.
+1 that looks amazing. Shame the mileage from the south of the UK makes it akin to a eurotrip. Scotland arguably looks matched or better than a lot of trips!

You'll be planning a Scottish meet next year then

And boys, seriously - MTFU... I think out of 10/11 cars on the Skyefall run only 3 were actually driven by
Scots, and one of the drove up from Kent

...oh, and Perry drove from somewhere on the coast in West Sussex...

I have done 4 Highlander trips, and they have been great.

The only downside is that it is still UK territory so you can not relax regarding speed traps, as we did come across a few sneaky ones during the runs up there and some of the roads are just begging for a good run.

A93, then up around Inverurie and Banchory are good. Anywhere from Applecross to Ullapool also amazing.

Any non dual carriageway route north from Dundee won't disappoint.

The 'Cairn O'Mount' road is epic.

So many great roads. Sadly for me none of them is within 40 miles of where I live :headbang:

Scotland is a bit of a haul north even from Lancashire but for you southern guys it can be a real drag. It's well worth the effort though, and you could tie it in with a run up through the North Yorkshire Moors National Park which also has some superb roads. Stop off at Whitby for fish 'n chips then a night in north Berwick just south of Edinburgh before heading north from there into the promised land. :)
