Surely that can be done cheaper, where are you based maybe someone can point you to a local specialist.

Any local garage can do this work with ease.

Specify the brand of parts you want and they'll source and do the lot for <£1k

ok thanks cj10jeeper, would be great any members could recommend anyone in the Windsor or Staines area!

Did a wee bit of online shopping...just for indication EuroCarParts quote £240 all in for Brembo pads and discs (front & back) and wear sensors. A set of Sachs rear shocks would set you back £130ish. Top mounts £50.

Brake line removal/replacement is fiddly and I'd leave that to a garage, but I'd be stunned if you had to pay half of that quote...

The parts are retail prices so doesnt look a million miles off..

The thing that does look expensive is the brake lines... Are they quoting 8 hours labour ?

Maybe they have that wrong,i would suspect a full car to be 8 hours, not just the rear brake lines.

Plus....a couple of rolls of brake pipe is around £40 for 50ft..... Unless they are using OEM preformed pipes..

I fitted rear discs and pads to my 2.5 yesterday, 30-45 mins per side to do. Pagid parts were just short of £100.

fronts were done a year ago and were less than £80 to buy.

Eurocarparts for the discs and pads and get a local mechanic to fit.

Cheers

The brake lines are a pig of a job from memory - I managed to get mine wire brushed and painted to prevent further corrosion by TWG Automotive in Camberly - suggest they might be worth contacting as they are a really good company and very competitive.

Also with the brakes - if the wear light isn't illuminated I wouldn't replace...? Just because they're low doesn't mean they wont last a few thousand miles more with ease! That's why they are fitted with the sensors!

To fit rear brake lines BMW remove the fuel tank hence the high labour prices. I did mine and they are a pita, but you can thread pipe across and then bend, flare and fit in situ.

As for oem pipes someone advised me they are treated plain steel so don't last at all so I avoided and made my own from decent grade.

Thanks all for the replies really useful information will update post when decided what I'm doing.... the garage is Birds in Iver btw. I know theyll do a proper job... but obviously can be done not cheap elsewhere and yes they were talking about removing the fuel tank.. It's a car I'm hoping to keep a long time so might just get them to do it...

Birds labour charge is almost the same as a dealer - as they used to be one.

You should easily be able to halve that cost by going to a specialist, and reduce it further by going to a non-specialist.

I dont think you say the reason for this work. Did car fail the MOT or were these items listed as advisories. If you simply took your car in and asked them to take a look at what might need doing they are likely to think its Christmas and make sure they find a list of things to charge you top rate for. I wouldnt trust any main dealer and would get someone else to take a look but firstly question whether the work is really necessary in the first place.

All looks fairly common or garden work - I'd be tempted to use a friendly garage as that place is outrageously pricey. Looks to be multiples of what's reasonable in my opinion.

Having had a friend in this situation before with suggested work, in his case he definitely didn't need to urgently action any of the work.

Have you had a look yourself at the likes of the brake pads and disks? Visually you should be able to tell if the disk is lipped and if the pads are low.

For brake lines it's maybe one to get them to elaborate on.
