We are now the owners of a 2003 Z4 with built in navigation, we think the car is fantastic however the 12 yr old navigation system leaves a lot to be desired, Can anyone tell us if there are any upgrades that are available ? I assume we would need a new screen with higher resolution as well, or do we simple take the "Garmin" with us?

There's update to the software that is pretty easy to do that will give you a 3D perspective view and there is an update to the maps disc done every year to give you the latest roads. Neither will make it look very modern.

Do a search for mk4 satnav custom discs which can give you things like 7 digit postcode code search and speed camera warnings. Still not a match on todays systems.

There are a few people who have ripped it out and replaced it with an android tablet solution, though I couldn't tell you how well this has worked out for them.
 
I here a lot of people complaining about the nav but in all honesty it has always got me safely where i wanted to go without any fuss/going round the houses/not actually getting you to the right place, it gives nice clear easy to follow instructions which is more than can be said for most sat navs I've used.
 
Technology has moved on a lot in 12 years I don't think anything you do will bring it up to date I just use Google maps on the I phone
 
One thing it does better than an aftermarket solution is that it can go without a satnav signal for sometime without losing where you are. Guess it's done by comparing data from from the car to calculate distance and direction traveled and then comparing it to the map.
 

One of the mentioned android installs , if you teather it to use your phones data, you get Google maps or waze is a good nav app
You can also then use Internet radio, Spotify or another streaming app

That looks great! Though I bet out if the reach of most people's skills?
 
Frankly for the sake of a free OS software download and a new map you can have a perfectly good sat nav system.

If you don't like it once done it's cost a few £'s and no reason why you can't also have you phone or a Tom to with you if you prefer.

My reason to like it is simply that it's all integrated into the car and (and phone, audio, etc.) and no messing with a map on a phone in hand or aftermarket holder, chargers, etc.

Clearly the guys pioneering the LCD panels in the sat nav unit is the way to go if you have time, some skill and desire
