Sat nav screen sometimes doesn't open on startup

That is a fault. If your car is under warranty, get the screen replaced.

Yes, common fault and no repair possible. Only replacement of the screen fixes it.

If you have 1 in 10 now, in a month it will be 1 in 5, then it will be 1 in 2 etc. It will drive you mad and it will fail completely eventually.

As the title says, this seems to happen 1 time in 10. Is that normal or considered a fault?

This is one of the symptoms I sometimes have when the battery is going flat too - so if it's not topped up then it could be worth investigating that also :)

Had this fault on my car from when I bought it. As PVR says, 1 in 10 will become 1 in 5 etc. Dealer's first attempt at a fix was to replace a faulty fuse. I argued that it wasn't the problem and sure enough it did it again the next day. They decided to replace motor ( as PVR says- you can't) and sod's law decreed it was fine the morning when I took it in for the third time. Big argument ensued as they said 'we cant find the fault so we can't replace' but after a few words from me and a call to BMW UK they agreed to replace the screen. Been fine since.
