Sat Nav problem?

As the major work is finished and the plan was to tax the car April now maybe May

I have done what most others are doing clean and polish etc.

The car has a built in sat nav this worked ok although out of date but worked.

This weekend I have noticed there is no map just a small icon in the top right corner

The other thing is when I scroll the menu or mode and go to set up it locks up until the ignition has been off for a while

Now the battery maybe having something to do with it but before I buy a new one I will run the car and see what happens

So can anyone help with the sat nav and or the set up bit?

dissconnect battery for a few mins. that sometimes fully reboots the nav system, also make sure it has an original disc

Have tried the discount the battery with no benefit
The disc is the one that came with the car and does not look like an original

It worked before the winter lay up

Will try the battery again (car is 120 miles from me at the moment)

The lenses are prone to fail, think its in warmer weather they show signs of this, but thats usually please insert map cd

I would source another disc, or borrow one (original) to test

Also if you go into SET whats the software version in top right?

There is a secret menu that shows the number of satellites found. Find that and check it is seeing them. If not it’s the gps antenna. You can get them on eBay for just over a tenner.

Tried a second hand gps sensor still no map

Anyone local to me prepared to lend me their sat nav disc just to try for the time it takes to boot up and display a map before I buy one.

well mine went funny other day car was parked up for 2 weeks, started fine, but after a few mines screen went liney and just stuck.

had to turn iginition off and on to get some life, track skip still worked and source button, but nothing on screen changed. took can for a long drive, then reset it and its been fine since.

Makes me wonder if the capitors or something isnt storing charge or know a few have said low battery can cause issues

New battery fitted last week and a 150 mile drive so would like to thing the battery is ok

With the disc out it does not ask for a disc

for me personally id try software upgrade / reinstall something may have got corrupted

Is that a case of putting a known good disc in

no, thers few software versions out theren v32 was bmws last official, then some modified them to have speed cameras, different graphics on the sat nav etc

if you google "bmw mk4 sat nav software update" you should find how to do it, the basics is download, burn to cd, insert in car leave door open, then turn ignition then it should show on screen update, click ok wait fro it to finish take disc out

Have tried a film dvd in it to see if there was any Difference in the sound as it did not sound like a laptop dvd drive no wizzing round sound

Had an error message to say wrong dvd so it is trying to read what is in there

Had the battery strap off again still the blank screen with the half world in the top corner

Will have to wait until my son can burn a dvd as only have a phone and ipad With me

The best I have had so far is a message saying please wait

if it says please wait sounds like its struggling with the dvd but as to why is not straying on that screen could still be worn lazer unit.

If you have no disc in and you cant get in settings, I would honestly try updating software, as you should have access to that to set time/date etc

but when the dvd lenses go because there always reading errors it can cause issues

Have you checked the hidden menu to check it if finding satellites?

Have not been able to get into the hidden menu.

Do you have a step by step just to make sure I am doing it right

Thanks

Changed the DVD unit for a second hand one from Quarry Motors and it powered up and showed a disc read error so tried the disc from my DVD unit and this one brought up a map only issue was it put me in Fleetwood about 250 miles from where I was, went for a short drive and the sat nav position did not change, so I changed the GPS sensor back to the original one and after a few mins it put me in the correct location, short drive showed it working ok

Having talked to someone selling savnat DVD’s he said a lot of these units start to have problems around the 80 to 90 k miles my car is 87,500.
