I'm not sure if this has been done or possible, but could the DVD drive for the Nav be replaced to pull the data from a flash card?

I am sure you could even make a Raspberry PI emulate the iso of a disc and interact with the computers system?

I did look into finding something to do this, but isnt the firmware loaded onto the drive?

I did find the company that created the units and there was a SD card version but wasnt designed for the BMW.

Anythings possible but its whos willing to put in the time and develope it

The DVD holds the map data correct? My DVD drive keeps failing to read, then it lets me go back into the GPS screen.

In the grand scheme of things it's not "That" hard, just taking one data medium and putting on a much better one. If I could get rid of the DVD drive, it would make the whole system quicker (of pulling the map data) and not prone for going wrong.

yes, it seems they are notorious for not reading, things is.. thr laser wears out, and mine is 13 years old , so .. but. didnt there used to be people out there that would replace the laser ?
im thnking pc cd roms here, but same things really , i have a portable cd rom powered from the usb , couild that be made to work ?

It's just a DVD drive that has a buffer in it. Just replacing the drive with the same make/type should work.

you can just replace the laser unit get them for 20-40 quid last time i checked, not too difficult of a job.
