Sat nav - Choosing your own route.

I currently have a tomtom that I got in 2010, it still works well but was demoted to the work van a couple of years ago. I get on with it well and would be reluctant to go with another brand.

I want to get a new one for the zed and was wondering if any of them can navigate through a pre determined route that I would have chosen Road by road.

This is how my Garmin edge 800 navigates on my road bike. I go on to (ridewithgps.com) and choose where I want to go by drawing a line over the roads.

I'm taking the zed to the Dordogne next summer and want to go 'the back way'.

I use TomTom on android phone I can can set routes like that. Can plan on pc then send to the phone.

Not sure if iPhone is the same, but if you have android it's worth a look. It's free for under 50 miles a week so you can test. Real cost is about £18 per year which gives you traffic and safety cameras along with maps for Europe the states and other countries.

Why not just select to avoid the toll roads.

But not all sat nav's have the option to import routes, hence the OP's question

I use a Garmin 350LM which I export routes to, but they are expensive as designed for motorcycle use, so are waterproof.

Follow the green town names instead of the blue ones , back roads all the way . There's only 3 tolls to pay on the way to the Dordogne , but using the back roads will take a lot more time , especially when you get stuck behind trucks and farm vehicles . I used to live down there and I wouldn't even consider going the back roads , it'll take forever rather than the 8 hours it takes on the mway .

Some good suggestions above thanks everyone. I will deffo be looking into the tomtom option if it works on iOS as I have got used to using 'maps' on my phone already.

I do carry a map when abroad but having witnessed the arguments from the back of the car when we went on holiday as a kid I know the satnav will make things easier for me!

I still maintain that's how I learned the swear words I use daily now

I use a Garmin Zumo for the bike too but I've also used CoPilot on the phone you can load custom routes as trp files. Tyre to Travel mentioned above can save your route as trp for CoPilot (or itn for TomTom or gpx for Garmin etc). I think you can download 1 map free with Copilot, I have the full europe maps and they are not that expensive really - plus the processing power of phones is better than most sat navs. I used it on the bike until I got the garmin which as mentioned is waterproof and easier to use with gloves.

Yes I've got a 2001 Fireblade rry I've had from new I have the more basic 340LM basically the same but without some features.
