Running in a new e89

A related question has to do with the first oil change.

Back in the day, they used to recommend that the oil be changed after the first 1,000 miles because of the shavings, etc., that reside in the engine from the manufacturing process.

Now that BMW pays for the maintenance, they no longer recommend a break-in oil service.

What do yall recommend if planning to keep the car for a very long time?

Manufacturing tolerances, material science and fully synthetic oils have come along way since the 70's and 80's so it is not necessary to change the oil after a few thousand miles, however it won't do any harm either.

My first oil change was at 26,000 miles and the engine is still quite tight at 53,000 miles in that time it has used just 1.5 litres of oil. As far as I am concerned the biggest sin is thrashing a cold engine.

They don't pay for it in the UK. We can buy packages, or pay when we take the car in. Either way, BMWs recommendation is the same.
We just follow the service indicator.

In my opinion, chaining synthetic oil at 1,000 or 7,500 miles is about as useful as burning $20 bills. If you do change the oil early, send it off for used oil analysis.
 
I'm sat in the pub presently.. And I re read that topic subject and thought 'I can barely move in my e89 let alone run!'

I know what you mean there. I am regularly on Southampton docks when delivering a new yacht to someone when the cargo moving guys are loading brand new £70k + Jaguar XKR on to a ship and how they drive along the road and up towards the ships loading ramp is boarder line criminal.

Thank you, sars. I noticed from other posts that when it comes to engineering and material science you know your stuff.
 
I've just finished running mine in and it's been driven as the manual told me to, not over 4500 revs and I've not gone over 80mph.

There's a reason the people that build the cars tell you how to drive them when new so I've gone by the book. Other people don't, that's up to them.

I've got 1290-ish on the clock now so this morning I gave it a little pop! :evil: :driving:
 
I always held below 4,000 RPM and no full throttle runs for the first 200 miles just to let everything seat, but also factor in that you need to let the brakes bed in as well as the tires.

I saw a "Mega Factories" program recently about trucks in America (forget the brand) and they do just that....put the drive wheels onto a rolling road and take it up to a certain speed, not sure what speed, but it was quite high.
 
I doesn't matter what the dealer says, its a good bet to take it easy for the first 3k miles or so, I do the first oil change early because it makes me feel better. And the car won't let you launch it until the computer lets you, I forget the exact distance required but that's only if you want to drag race through the parking lot etc...... :thumbsup:
