RPM @100Kph

My '03 Z4 2.8 L 5 speed seems to rev high compared to my Honda 4 cyl.

Z4 sitting at nearly 3000 rpm at 100Km/hr. Is that typical?

hi welcome to the forum!

my 2.5 sits close to the 2500rpm mark at about 70-80 mph

3000 at 62mph sounds a bit high to me.

Yes it IS a Z4, it is a five speed, 2.5 litre (sorry for typo) and the rpm quoted is in fifth (top) gear.
3000 is too high for my liking, but I dont know anything about what rear gear ratio it might have.
Goes like stink though!

it might be that production finished in 02 on the Z3 but there is a few on 03 plates - not many though.

anyway. mines a 2.5i and in 5th you are looking at pretty much spot on 3K rpm at 70 MPH which is about 110 KPH so seems around the same ball park and about 60MPH is 2K rpm in 5th.

Sounds ok. My 07 3.0Si sits at about 3K rpm running at around 70 MPH. Makes since it would be about the same as the 2.5 as we're still talking a 6 cylinder.

Yeah, preface lift Z4 with 2.5 and 5-speed manual revs that high at 100kph. I don't know why BMW didn't install the 6 speed on the early 2.5, though the 6-speed SMG was available as an option. I've actually hit the rev limiter in 5th gear on the Autobahn, a 6th gear would be a nice addition. I'm not sure what would be involved in swapping out the 5-speed for the 3.0 6-speed, I suspect the drive shaft, bell housing clutch/flywheel may need changing too. Several years back I remember reading where 2.5i owners in Germany were swapping the rear diff with 3.0i owners.

The 2.5i 5-speed manual came with a 3.46:1 rear diff while the 3.0i 6-speed came with a 3.07:1. The 5th gear in both transmissions are 1:1.

In the US (likely Cananda?) the sold date or date of manufacture is not the car's model year. There were 2003 Z4s sold in Oct-Dec of 2002 and are labeled 2003s. In the UK it seems the car's sold date becomes the car's year, hence 2003 Z3s.

Just checked on the way in this morning. 07, 3.0Si, 6 spd manual. 53mph, 2000 rpm. 60 mph, 2250 rpm. Couldn't get up to 63 due to the traffic.

about the same for me, 3k revs = over motorway limit for me 70mph +, i tend to change gear at 3k when doing normal drives / keep under 3k until the oil is up to temp. mine is also a 2003 2.5i se
