rpi skid plates.... cant recommend imo.

ok guys so i paid 70gbp for these skid plates, ive fitted them to the car and after looking at them and really thinking about it, it looks to me that if you were to catch the skid plate of the corner it would probably ruin the bottom of the bumper instead of just a chip or gouge mark, i guess i expect the corners to be rounded off alittle, if you get a strike in the middle or anywhere other than the leading edge, they will work but fine, if you catch them on the out edge (like if you were to crack a curb) this will cause imo more damage, also these slightly lower the fang making the bolt sit lower, they needed to be supplied with recessed bolts.

IMO i cant recommend these to other z4m owners.

forums are about educating the masses... these get a thumbs down for me, ill leave them in place but these are way over priced for their purpose.
 
Got them on mine saved my bumper more than once... have a look at this one of socketRs from this weekend

Found them great with curbs, never caught the bumper with them on and I just touch the plate up if i do catch it which I've only done once and above is the evidence lol.
 
fair enough scott hopefully they'll save me in the future, just getting my opinion on these and i think these would cause more damage in a certain instance.... ill keep them on as ive purchased them but i think these were a waste of money. of course imo.

Ye no worries I'm just satisfied with them because they have worked, at the end of the day it just stops the grinding of the bottom of the fangs if you do catch a curb, but your not wrong about the bolts! just stupid they stick out so far.

ill look into some nice titanium countersunk bolts for this part i think.

Just buy a piece of ABS plastic sheet and then make your own. They'd be flexible enough to absorb light curb impacts which would avoid any damage to the bumper, which is supposed to be the real purpose of these things.

I agree! I don't understand why someone doesn't make them with recessed bolts and possibly a rounded edge. The few times I have attempted to damage my fangs have always been by running up on those angled parking space concrete barriers. If I had the RPI skid plates on the car, the bolt would have most likely grabbed the concrete and ripped the fang clear off the car :thumbsdown:

If someone draws round them, i'm sure you can get a fabricator to cut some out of Alloy plate and countersink some bolt holes in it?
 
I have actually got my exhaust place to fabricate me some in ss. Will post pics once i have sprayed and fitted them.

i think these would be much better made of some sort of plastic with countersunk wholes.... job done, i can definitely see mnay instances where the rpi or other metal items will really save the car BUT i can see certain instances that will probably ruin the bumper...
