I am sharing an experience on the chance it helps someone. My e85 3.0 was suffering from a rough idle. I changed the ignition coils, sparks, checked the DISA, throttle boot etc but no signs of anything wrong. I could not detect any leaks. Previous work included the vanos rebuild and PCV replacement. I didn't mind the checks because the work confirmed components were OK and I am the pro-active type. My diagnostic readout pointed at the camshaft (exhaust), I replaced the sensor but no change. However, I read online of someone who had similar symptoms with code 28B8. He removed the vanos solenoid and found a stuck piston. I removed both the exhaust and intake solenoids and cleaned them out with MAF spray cleaner, I also carried out tests to confirm they were working ok which they were. By the way, the pistons were not not stuck but I cleaned and oiled them anyway. After reassembly, the car has been running well and the rough idle has gone. After clearing the fault code, it has not reappeared. Performance is great and better than it has been for a while. I cannot recall the person who shared the how to and the stuck piston but thank you whoever you are. BTW, mileage at the time of work was 60890.
