Subject: BMW Z4 2004 – Roof Won’t Open – No Response at All

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone here can help. I have a 2004 BMW Z4 and the roof is no longer opening. A couple of years ago, the motor was replaced, and in the past I’ve had issues with the parcel shelf switch.

Previously, when the parcel shelf switch wasn’t working properly, I would get an orange light and the roof would at least unlock—even if it didn’t operate fully. This time, it’s completely different: there’s absolutely no response when I press the open/close button. No lights, no sound, nothing. It’s like the button isn’t being pressed at all.

Has anyone experienced this kind of issue before? Any advice on where to start troubleshooting would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Could be a number of things

Start first with windows- do they drop a small amount when you open the doors

If you can somehow get INPA on your laptop for diagnostics, that would be a very good start into the investigation. Helped me find a break in the wiring loom

Having visited Alan (Number5) yesterday in Bristol and finally getting my hood issue resolved I just wanted to add my recommendation for his services. Cannot rate him anything other than bloody excellent. I've been passed around from garage to garage trying to get this resolved for 12+ months and told it would require the hood to be removed, etc. Last time I had this done it was £2.5k. Alan replaced and relocated the motor in less than 2 hours with no hood removal required and the bodge job that the expensive garage had done previously was clear to see. All this for about the same price most dealership garages charge for 1 hours labour!!! If you're having hood issues then Alan is your man!!!!
