Roof sorted, thanks to this forum!

Two months into owning my Z4 and the roof just stopped working. Would not un-latch and had the Orange light. After that horrible feeling in my stomach that the motor had given up I trawled this forum and found posts about the micro switch in the boot.

Opened the boot and tray seemed to be fully down but just in case I moved it up and then back down again. Back into the car and the roof works fine. Such a relief! I throw work items in the boot and think it had moved up slightly on one side. Now to be more careful in the future.

Also roof drains unblocked just to make sure, motor side was fine but other was full of muck. Boot has stopped getting wet now on that side so guessing it can leak from the drain well.

Thanks again forum

I've found this forum invaluable from day one.

Me too :D
OP, I had this with my roof, occasional no goes, then move the shelf up and down and it would work again....until it stopped and no amount of shelf jiggling would get it moving, I then sprayed electrical switch cleaner into the micro switch and my roof is working a treat again

Thanks for that, when I get the chance I will check over and clean the micro switch to hopefully prevent more frights!

Bear in mind that if you're getting water in the boot from the passenger side, this is where the motor well is located and once that fills up with water when blocked it can only go one way and that is in the boot.

Thanks Georgio, my boot leak was on drivers side and that is the one that was blocked. All dry since cleaning

Had my Zed for two months and it just dawning on me that I could have a potential roof problem although its working ok at the moment. Whilst giving the car a lengthy valet, I noticed dampness under the carpet behind the passenger seat. Thinking it was a bit of water I wedged a towel under the carpet to absorb the water but after a couple of weeks hanging up to dry the towel is still wet. My wife had a look and proclaimed that it felt like very thin engine oil, possibly someone spilling baby oil. Could this be motor hydraulic oil leaking from somewhere - but I dont see how it could have just got under the carpet and nowhere else.
