Roof Problems

Hi all, sorry if this scenario has been covered.

My parents 2004 Z4 roof has stopped working. Unlike all the problems I've found on here, when you push the roof switch, it doesn't blink at all…. no red light or amber light. Ive checked the fuses and all seems fine there. Ive looked at the possibility of a faulty microswitch in the boot, but surely if it was faulty, a light would still blink on the dash to say the roof bag (or whatever you call it) isn't fully down.

Any help would be fantastic :)

Welcome !, If it's the micro switch, you get an Amber light on, no lights on and you've checked the fuse... next step is to see If power 12vDC is getting into and out of the switch and to the motor, so you'll need a voltmeter and wiring diagram, can you hear the motor running, any noises at all ?

Hi, cheers for the reply. No noise or anything. Will get a volt meter on it tomorrow. Hoping its a cheap fix for a car with only 17k on the clock :(
 
Could be the actual switch in the car, although unlikely. Where in the country are you?

I have a spare you could test but that depends where you are?
 
A lot of roof failures seem to be getting posted? It's this an all year round topic or are people just not reading the section in the handbook that says "do not operate when temperature is below 10deg" ?
 
10 degrees, are you having a laugh. It hardly gets above that in this country. I'm sure the limit is much lower.

Explains why mine died tbh! (Fixed now) It's not too bad of a job either when you get into it
 
Just read the manual and it says not rose use below 14f or -10c.

That pretty much means we can use ask the time in the UK. Exception if it's covered in frost though.

Where in kent mate? Happy to lend a hand/give advice if you want/need it. I'm in Sidcup.

Did you test if the switch was getting power? I assume it's not even un-latching.
 
From all the posts in here on the subject, I'd consider the roof motor to be a very expensive consumable that WILL fail eventually. Personally rather than waste hundreds of pounds on one that will fail again in 3 years, I'd just buy a hard top and take it off when you want to go for a topless drive.

Which defeats the object of having a convertible. What are you going to do if it rains?? Park under a tree?! Maybe you could just use the force.

Not a workable solution.

A simple bit of maintenance should ensure the problem doesn't happen.
 
Ive fitted a few motors now and to try and prevent the new motor failing in the future is to seal the motor in a bag and drill the plastic casing to allow the water to drain.
