Roof Problem?

Today after work, decided as it is nice and shiny day,I shall put the roof down considering I cleaned it this morning and used BMW convertible care kit, felt very good with myself, till the moment I pressed the button for the roof to go down  The mechanism started working fine, but after opening 2 maybe 3 inches it stopped! nothing else happened, tried putting down again, nope it won't budge :headbang:

did whatever I could think of and checked the owner's manual with no success,so called BMW emergency and explained the problem, luckily as I was still at work I sat in my office till the mechanic came, which have to say was a very nice chap,he only managed to secure the roof for me manually and advised to contact my dealer :(

so,now the question is,if anything needs changing or repairing, would this be covered by used car warranty?I have bought the car about 4 months ago and it has got 2 years BMW warranty.

I should hope it is covered, otherwise I shall have a very nice conversation with the dealer whom I bought the car from :x

It should be. When I bought mine I got a year warrante from the garage. I made sure they included the roof in that.

Under normal circumstances I'd just say it was the infamous roof motor had failed. Well documented problem and process to fix

Interesting however that you had just cleaned it. Wonder if you could have physically damaged something by aggressive pressure on the frame, etc.?

Motor failure warranty, if you did something your problem.

cheers CJ, No I am usually very soft on these things, won't put too much pressure  I don't know if the motors have been replaced before or not, would I be able to get a copy of the warranty jobs done on the car from the dealer?

I have talked to the local dealer,Coopers of Norwich,it's booked to go in on 26th! the earliest

The dealer will know if the motor has been replaced under warranty before from their system.
Generally they do not release paperwork on any warranty work, unless it's a recall as you the customer don't pay. Maybe that's just my local dealer.

I'm sure the dealer will fix it, but imho no need to mention the roof cleaning, or you give them a 'you did it' out.

My dealer ran me off a list of warranty work I had done when I asked for it without issue.

I have booked the car with Listers of Boston now,as I bought the car from them and they will see me monday, unlike the useless bunch @ Coopers of Norwich which can't see me till 26th Oct.I will ask for the list of things that has been done, the bottom line is they might say you can't have it,nothing to lose then  will let you know how I got on,cheers.

I think that's the correct thing to do and go to the supplying dealer. They will be more helpful and I see no reason for them to be able to reject a simple and genuine failure. It's certainly not a wear and tear matter.

If it's the roof motor needing replacement it's likely to be in a few days. You might want to pre arrange a courtesy car and depending upon distance to travel leave it with them until fixed.

cheers CJ,yes they are going to have the car for a few days and will be supplying me with a car for the period, and they only need my driving licence, unlike Coopers who were asking for a fully comp insurance for their car!they don't accept 3rd party for their cars, not very impressed with them.

Update:

dropped the car off this morning, received a call now stating that they have checked the car and the control unit is faulty which will be replaced under warranty.Hopefully the car will be ready tomorrow for collection.

just out of curiosity what is this control unit?what does it control?where is it located?

That's strange, was watching Auto Trader on the TV the other day with a Z4, S2000, MX-5 and Porsche. One of the things Mike said to look out for on the Z4 was the roof control unit which can go. I thought the main problem was soggy roof motors! Anyway the bloke rejected the Z4 as it was to "common", what ?!?! How many of them are there in the UK, very rare over here.

with regards to warranty works carried out on mine, forgot to ask while I was at the dealers :headbang: but emailed the guy I have been dealing with,he passed it to their service manager and this morning had an email from him that he has sent me the warranty work list carried out on my car to my home address

by the way, anybody has any idea about this control unit?

It appears this is a common issue but if the root cause of what caused the failure to begin with isn't fixed, you'll have the problem again. Here's a thread from another forum where there's a suggestion to unplug the drain holes which can get plugged and cause water leakage onto the controller unit. Water and electronics don't go well together obviously so look for the drain holes and make sure they're clear.

On that thought, I better go check mine!

Good luck with getting yours fixed!
