Roof not going right down so it clips in?

Hello everyone :D

When I put my roof down yesterday I noticed the a red light was flashing in between the switches so I pulled over and put it up without problem.

I've had a look at the roof today and it goes up/down fine and the only thing I can notice is that the roof doesn't clip in at the front?

Do you think that might be what causes the light and whats causing this?

Anyhelp would be great!!

Thanx :D

I had similar problem when I got my 2.5i initially and then finally it got stuck and had to be replaced- was told it was the motor which was the problem and was replaced. Of course it was under warranty. i would strongly advice u to get ur local BMW dealer and if its under warranty then to get it checked and make sure its ok. Occ it could be the electrics which could play up. GOOD LUCK

Thanx for the quick reply :)

So does yours now clip down when you open it? I always have the wind deflector in so I have never noticed how far it goes down before.

I am still under warranty with the BMW Specialist I got the car from and I've left a message with their service department so lets see what that say :)

Mine is currently at our local dealers having the exact same thing fixed under warranty. It all started when I was putting the roof down and occasionally when the light had stopped flashing and i drove off it would start flashing again.

Then it started not going up properly, would need pressing down at the end of the cycle so it clipped in. It also developed a leak and the passenger footwell was wet - i dont think they are related though.

I will let you know the outcome and what work they have done to it when i get it back - they have it for a week.

(Very annoying that the last 2 days have been very sunny).

If you could let me know Alex that would be great :)

I put it down again when I popped out it didn't clip in but the lights didn't flash this time. I hope its nothing serious!

They need to adjust the latch behind the deflector AND the balance bars (two ribe bolts behind the covers on the roof near the window). This will change the throw and positioning of the hood when it goes down to align with the latch.

Its a crap design and most dont latch correctly - hence it was removed on the 06 facelift.

Thats interesting that they removed it.

I don't know when it stopped clipping in place but it did when I first got it. The wind deflector hides it so I never noticed.

I will try the roof again tomorrow and see if the light flashes or if its ok. :)

Picked it up. Its slightly better but still not as it was - and they tried to charge me £140 saying it wasnt under warranty as it was 'adjustment' and not a fault.

Clearly they were trying it on because as soon as I said no way, they said ok we wont charge you in this instance. Plonkers.

I need to wait until it rains to see if the leak is fixed.

The balance bars I should think. Tweaking those is a lot easier than moving the latch position which involves removing most of the rear trim to get to the big bolts. Ping off the two covers on the roof upright (near the door pin - can't miss it). Look for marks on the ribe bolts, they are very easy to damage and I'm looking to replace mine with four new ones (£3 each!!!).

Well the car was in today and they said you can't adjust the roof in anyway as its a fixed unit.

So does anyone have any sort of dealer guide or so on I can print off and show to them?

If anyone does have a guide I could print off it would be great, that way I can go here you go now get on and do it!

Is this not it?

AL you are fantastic!!!

Interesting it says "Some customers may complain that in colder ambient temperatures" it worked fine when it was warm but now its rediculously cold its not.

That has cheered me up so much!! I got a bit pi*sed off with them.

Thank you!! :D

I have a 2006 and I had the same problem. There came a time when it didn't latch properly and I'd get he red light blinking after driving a while (because the wind would simply lift the top a bit indicating that it's not fully open). The dealer tried several times to adjust it, and it helped somewhat, but it still happens occasionally and I've learned to live with it. Now I just make sure it latched properly before driving off. Sometimes I have to raise it a bit and lower it again for it to catch.
