Roof motor issue

Ok guys, it's been a while since I've posted, but I still have the z4 and I'm trying to love it again but it does make it so hard.
The boot filled with water, and the roof pump and motor nearly drowned. The electrical connections were even under water when I found the issue.
So dried it all out. Have now fitted new rear light seals and air vents , and resealed the top boot seal, so hopefully water ingress will slow down.
The problem is I have undone the wrong screws on the motor and pulled it off the hydrolic pump unit whilst still in the boot. So I have a boot full of hydrolic fluid and I think I've lost part or the coupling. The coupler is round with small holes and in each hole is a pin, rod, shift. Not exactly sure but after cleaning up the oil I found pins for all but 2 holes.
Should all the holes have pins in? I expect the answer is yes as the coupler must be so kind of rotary centrifuge type of system and with 2 pins missing will it work if I can get it back together.
I have tried to search the forum for roof motor pump but there are far too many pages to read them all.
I was only trying to take the motor off to dry the inside. Now it seems I might need to buy a whole new unit for 2 pins.
Does anyone know if these pins can be purchased separately?
Many thanks
Jon

Sorry I can’t help with how the pump goes together but if you are a couple of pins short what about measuring the diameter of the bar and possibly buying a length of the same size and cut it to the correct length.

Thanks Chippie but i think the pins are actually some kind of roller bearings so not sure it would last very long
But nice idea
Jon

This is the part in question.. Does anyone know if this will work with 2 of those of pins missing?
Thanks

Ah.... I see what part you are talking about now. I never removed the piece with the pins, only the slotted plate came adrift.

I had that exact same thought and sent him one, but as yet no reply...:(
As i said in the begining of my message i expect he is feed up with stupid questions about the Z4 roofs he must have had hundreds of over the years
But is sit with fingers crossed hoping hes just been away or is too busy to respond.

Thanks flybobbie, I've just spent a couple of hours looking at then all on ebay, maybe I will call some and see.
I'm not sure if this is common knowledge here on the forum but I have discovered that the motor used to drive the hydraulics used on more than carrot just the E89s it is also used on the older Audi A5 convertibles and those motors seem to be a lot cheaper on Ebay. It may also be used on a Mercedes convertible. I think it's just the hydraulic chamber and outlets that are different.

Ok, So Ive now cleaned, dried and reassembled the motor and it runs very smoothly from a battery charger, so I'm hoping the motor is going to be fine i now just need to find the dam 2 missing pins. Measured the size of the remaiing pins and it seems they are 3.5mm diameter and 8 .2mm long. they are magnetic so must be made of some kind of steel. Mike @the Zed Shed has confirmed they should be 8 pieces and i only have 6.
He said he would have to split a good unit to supply me 2 pins which is fair enough. Im tempted to put it all back together and try it with just 6 pins. but then feel if it is desgined to have 8 it should have 8 so I'm now looking for 2 pins 3.5mm x 8.2mm

So with my usual gung ho approch i have fashioned 2 pins from an old 3.5mm drill bit cut to lenght and polished up so they slid in and out just like the originals. also i have noticed that there are in fact only 7 pins, i was still short 2 but have got them all in place. unfortunatly i have had other chores today so never got it reassembled to test but fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed 🤞

Ok so i have made 2 pins, but the guys at Hoodtech are sending me 2 replacement pins in the post so i will wait till they arrive before refitting everything just in case the made pins do more damage than good.
Will keep you all posted.
I have now changed the rear light seals and used gutter sealant on the main boot seal across the top of the boot, I have also purchased 2 off rear vents but looking at the ones in mine they look ok, so i will hold off changing them yet as i'd rather not remove the bumper unless nesersary. the boot is still dry for now but we have not had much rain to test it out as of yet, but so far the boot ha stayed dry. You never know I might even get to put all the boot trim back in the boot, its been out so long now I was wondering if I can remenber how it all goes back in, but I'm sure I'll find a how to somewhere

Can you remind me of the REG number so that I can avoid accidentally purchasing this car from Autotrader in the future?

Matt ye of little faith when the pins for the coupler arrive the roof will be as good as if not better than new, and I'll have one of the few 2010 Z4's with a dry boot

Well motor is re-attached to the pump so alls good there, but now i have roof movement impeeded on the i drive and a fault code of A696 i think which i believe is a Hal sensor so still more work to do. GRRR its never ending
Jon

Well the replacememt Hal sensor arrived this morning in the post, cleared all fault codes and disconnected one of the sensors and tried to open the roof got a fault code of A696 so reconnected that one and disconnected the other one reset all fault codes and tried again and got a different fault code still says hal sensor open circuit but this one was a different code so that showed me which hal sensor was at fault, it was the top one.
so unplugged it and soldered the old plug to the new sensor, after testing the connections from the plug to the wire I had stripped ready to solder to make sure the fault was not in that small piece, slipped a small piece of heat shrink tubing up the wire and soldered then together slipped the tube down and heated it till it shrunk over the joints, wrapped the black cloth tape around it. cleared all fault codes and then re-scanned and had not faults, so put it all back in place cable tied everything back in place and pressed the button......
Roof opened :) better still it also closed again. So I opened the boot lid from locked position and closed the boot, soft close worked and all is fine and dandy.
Tried it half a dozen times and it opens and closes just like its meant to.
Very pleased at last.
Over all cost was not too bad as I had a few bits already, main costs were the Hal sensor ( ebay £20 witrh postage) 2 off replacement pins for the motor coupler ( £15 from Roof tech)
I still need to replace all the boot trim and will require a couple extra black push in rivet type fixings as I know I broke a couple taking it all apart
But I'm sure I can get those from ebay
I finally have a working roof again.

I wonder if anyone has thought of a way to sound a warning if the battery compartment is getting wet as i feel all my roof issues were due to water leaking into the boot, and not realising it was happening untill it was too late. When the roof stops working or the motor just struggles to open the roof.
