Roof Motor Failure... Does it come under wear and tear?

I would certainly say no, as its a motor like a starter motor etc. Wear and tear are like tyres and brake pads, things that will wear basically.

I asked WD when I was looking around and the guy said it was wear and tear, and also it was a design fault so wouldn't pay out.

however I've heard of someone getting it done through WD...

Guys no way is this wear and tear.

This refers in the majority of instances, and as Chris identifies, to mechanical features which by their very nature and use have a limited life span - clutches, wiper blades, tyres, brake componets (discs/pads) it can also refer to other items such as wheel bearings, bushes etc which will have a lifespan but not at a low milieages. The roof motor is an integral part of the vehicle and as such should have been designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle.

BUT we know what BMW UK think of that.....

I asked the BMW Dealer when I got my Z4 - "If the roof motor fails, am I fully covered in the 12 months warranty?" and he replied Yes - absolutely.
Though they should also accept that it is a flawed design, and shoulder at least some of the responsibility (cost) of replacing them.

When I come to extend the warranty on my E89 after the standard 3 years runs out, I will be making sure the roof components are covered as part of the extended warranty. I know that seals/rubbers probably won't be since they will suffer from weathering and the environment, but I would hope the roof hydraulics are covered.

Drain holes getting blocked would be wear and tear.

I was thinking about this today - the roof design gets a lot of grief because of blocked drain holes, but overall it's a brillian design i think.. when it was launched, not many softops could lower the roof in 8 seconds. Compare it to the Spider I had last, which looked a lot nicer because of the tonneau, but it's a brilliantly simple design.

Got mine done under warranty, not sure it was the motor or something to do with electrics, but they where happy to do it under the full extended warranty. The Z roof is sooo quick, the spider i am getting is 25 seconds (think might be the o - 60 time a well  ), agree with Andy the spider looks neater, but zapping it down at the lights is out.

Z roof

i have a warranty with warranty direct and when i asked about it they said the roof motor is covered .on.the policy it is refered to as sunroof motor though . i also made sure the vanos unit is specifically mentioned on my policy document as beencovered

Thanks for the feedback.

I ended up going with WD. I have another quick query... It states in the T&C...

1. Servicing & Maintenance
You must look after the vehicle in line with the manufacturer’s servicing handbook, and have it serviced by a VAT-registered garage within 30 days or 1000 miles (whichever is sooner) of the recommended service interval. To prove this you should make sure the garage fills in and stamps the handbook. You should also keep the invoices from services as you must provide proof of servicing when you make a claim. If the customer has provided parts for the servicing of the vehicle, this will only be acceptable if there is proof of purchase of such parts. Your vehicle must have a valid MOT certificate at the time of a claim.

Our services are usage based and we need to do it within the mileage limit indicated. How can I be sure the previous owner definitely kept to this? :?

Well this is a very sore subject with me as my car has just been returned to me after nearly a month in the garage with roof motor failure!

I bought the car in March from an independant "specialist" sports car garage and took the extra warranty so I was covered for six months with warranties direct as previously mentioned. When the roof motor was diagnosed warranties direct would not pay as they say it WAS wear and tear..... I tried and tried along with the garage but still nothing from them.

We also tried the main stealer route but with no success. Apparently of the three main dealers I spoke too not one of them had heard of the problem.. that I find hard to believe with all of the failures mentioned on here and also the 140 motors that BMW has on order for the UK alone.

Anyway... sorry to winge but this just hit a nerve :!:

Forgot to mention it cost me £452.50 as my garage didnt charge me any labour.

??? right then.. I think I need to speak to my garage because according to them they wont?! I tried to speak to them a few times but as the garage was dealing with it I was asked to let them speak direct with the service department??

Thanks for the info!!

tiggy1985, PM me your email and i'll send you the policy details.
WD praise themselves for covering wear and tear as it's the main get out clause other warranty companies use to not pay for claims.
