Roof module struts

Hello All,

Just wanted to let you know that if you have your roof slamming into the boot (opening) or on your wind screen (closing), then what you need is new struts
I put these.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314548107677
diagram for the part you need attached for reference.

now the roof lands in the boot and windscreen gracefully!
NB: BMW advises a shockingly expensive tool to do this (over £200!!; see picture):

part numbers:

Replaced by: 83302472914
Note:
(Claping tool) For removal and installation of gas-filled shock absorbers on hardtop.

SI number: 01 21 09 (583)

The way we did it (after few failed attempts) was to open the roof and stop the opening just in the middle between when the roof unlatch from the screen and go sit in the boot. Then you get one small (but STRONG) ratchet strap to reduce the length of the strut so that you can insert it onto the ball heads. They are not like the struts for the boot door. if you do NOT do this you will not be able to fit them.
*Be careful as they are under pressure once you shorten them with the strap*

I hope this helps someone

max

Max,

Nice writeup -- I always do best with more pictures... can you add one to show the position of the top when you remove the strut?

And probably the most important, how did you affix the strap to the strut to remove the existing one and place the new one without getting in the way of the installation sockets?
