Roof Issue

I've been searching the threads for my issue and can't find quite the same thing...feel free to redirect me if my searching is as brilliant as my DIY/mechanics skills!

When trying to drop the roof this weekend, it starts to go down, then the clips/hooks don't seem to fully release. Gentle encouragement/knock/pull with my hand, then kicks everything in to action again. There is no issue raising/closing the roof.

I've seen threads about motor failures, with strange noises, flashing lights and the earth moving, but this seems rather less drastic (I hope!!).

Is there one motor that controls the locking and releasing of the hood and another that raises/lowers it, or is it all the same motor?

Do I just need to squirt some form of lubrication (what?) somewhere (where?).

Any thoughts?
 
The hook latches located in the front rail of the soft top and the little roller sockets on top of the screen probably need a squirt of lubrication, avoid WD40 though as actually washes out oils. Light cycle oil or good old 3 in 1 will do. My catches stuck about 3 years ago but have been fine since giving them an occasional treatment.

Whilst you are at it do the same on all the hinge points on the roof mechanism (stop it half way to get at some of them) but keep a cloth handy to catch excess and stop it dropping on your seats :thumbsup:
 
Excellent thanks. I was hoping it wasn't the motor; but feared if it stuck it would burn out the expensive motor.
Will be locked in the garage with 3 in 1 tomorrow.

Success! Roof goes up and down effortlessly now. Thanks for the advice/encouragement.

Stupidly decided to test the drain holes whilst on a roll - driver's side ok, but passenger side very slow for water to get through, but it does eventually - now need to pop round a mate's house to borrow a jack.

...so much for ten minutes jobs, but prevention is better than cure in this case.

Which side is the motor? Sod's law it'll be the side that is bunged up!

Roof motor is on the passenger site (for a RHD car) & if its sluggish this needs sorting asap, the below may help to understand how it works.

Thanks Tony.

It looks fairly straightforward, just need to borrow the jack - I tried to remove the cover without taking off the wheel, but can't get at the inner 8mm bolt. A job for another day, it's safely in the dry garage now.....
