Hi,

can anyone help me ?,
my roof Hydro-motor is not working i need to replace it.

I can't get the roof down manually, I've tried pulling on the RED finger pull device in the boot (with roof back a little and unlocked)but it's very tight and I'm sure it will break before it releases anything.

it is a hydraulic bypass I'm guessing ?

Anyone got any Ideas ? It's a 2004 Z4 and I have confirmed it's the motor. :headbang:

You guess correctly. The seizing seems to be a chronic problem. For those of us that still have functioning roofs, I wonder if it would be a good idea to 'exercise' the release cable once in a while (if still possible), or if the mechanism would just wear out and break.

Adamski :- seen that post it's excellent going to use that to help me take the roof off etc.

I think I'll have to try and press the button on the side of the Hydro-motor with a long screwdriver or something similar, seems impossible looking at the location ? or maybe try to disconnect one hydraulic line to alow fluid flow ?
 
UPDATE :-

If any one has the same problem in the future...here's what I did :-

I spent about an hour and a half getting the cover off the top of the Hydro-motor in situ(very difficult, made special tools to hook under the cover and pull up breaking the tape which I couldn't get access to remove)

Then I removed 1 of 3 allen key screws holding the bypass mechanism onto the Hydro-pump, then managed to get a screw driver under the assy and press the release button, then I could proceed with the roof removal.


On assembly I put vaseline over the brass plunger to prevent seizing / corrosion

Reinstalled the roof all is working fine now, took about 12 hours total for every thing ! :driving:
 
Wow! That must have been like arthroscopic surgery! Well done mate!
 
Hi,

just stripped down my old roof motor, cleaned it up lubricated it, a quick respray and it works great, will keep it as a spare :D

P.S. before anyone says anything, I did test it before and it wasn't working...now it works a dream

Hi Andysat,
absolutely not...put a new one in a few weeks ago, thought I'd see what was wrong with the old one, basically rusty water everywhere causing the brushes to lose contact with the comutator etc.
