Roof Hydraulic Pump Cooked AGAIN!

Hi Guys,

It's another beautiful day in Sydney so with roof down off I head to see a client. When I try and raise the roof, up comes a warning say the 'Roof Pump To Hot' and the roof
stays put (neatly stowed in the boot) Now, I'm not in the best of suburbs (it could be worse), but it's certainly NOT the place to leave the Z with the roof down. I tried the turning the car off and on, sitting for 5 minutes then trying agin but all to no avail. In the end I left it roofless in a nice busy street and hoped for the best. Luckily nothing happened.

I went straight to BMW Sydney to be told the pump for the hydraulics is cooked and needs to be replaced. The car is 20 days out of warranty :cry:

Let the fight begin :evil:

Has anyone else experienced this?
 
Sorry to hear that :( but doesn't bode well for future pump reliability :? When they say cooked do they mean the pump has burnt out?

I would hope BMW do the right thing and replace it, 3 years is not a long service life.

Yes TitanTim the pump motor has burned out and boy could you smell it. I opened to boot and lifted boot floor to have a look but couldn't even touch the unit as it was that hot!

I'm lucky here as my roof is basically never raised so my pump might work harder then some, but I do still think 3 years is not long in a car that is a convertible

Thats not good :( I would hope BMW will replace at full cost although if out of warranty they may only offer a goodwill part payment :cry:

Anyways jealous your in Sydney as have relatives there, and normally stay at Elizabeth Bay :)

Small world, I live in Darlinghurst which is one suburb away from Elizabeth Bay.

Still no news about my roof motor, that can't be good :cry:
 
Hi All,

Good news, BMW have paid for a new root motor and I got the car back yesterday. That's my first ever $0.00 invoice from my dealer :thumbsup:

Now to enjoy the beautiful autumn weather :D
 
Bad news guys,

I've burned out another roof motor. This time was much worse with smoke filling the boot and I was quite worried the motor was on fire. Luckily it wasn't.

So the car is back at BMW Sydney and I'm playing the waiting game...... :(
 
I know, how dare I use my convertible as a convertible :driving: The weather has been so wonderful here that my roof spends a lot of time going down... then back up again (sounds more like the hooker on a street corner) but the replacement motor is only 4 weeks old and I was in Thailand for 2.5 of those weeks, so I'm thinking that it's nothing I'm doing..I think.. :oops:

Unless you are in the habit of running the roof up and down continuously for hours, it cannot be anything you did. I'm surprised the thermal protection did not cut out before it got that hot. For two motors to cook like that in short order there has to be a problem in the roof mechanism causing much undue load on the motor.

Unless you're giving some tykes "rides" on the roof as it closes?
 
Good news :D

BMW have replaced the roof motor for a second time free of charge. In their diagnostics they have found noting wrong and are putting it down to replacement unit also being faulty.
I have my doubts but will just wait and see what happens. Watch this space.....
