Roof cleaning

Unfortunately my works car park is accross the road from a company that breaks up and screens rubble from building sites. The bodywork has lots of AG SRP and EGP on it so thats not a problem but every day the roof gets covered in dust.

I have tried using a hard bristled brush but it never properly does the job.

What do other people use on their roofs?

Luckily i move offices next week so no more probs but I would still like some good kit to look after it.

Thanks

Si

hoover?

I treated my roof at the weekend with Autoglym's convertible top cleaner and protector... before use it said to vacuum the canvass..... so that what I did :)

I used the Autoglym product at the weekend... seemed to work well but will see when it rains next... BTW, I use one of those rolleds for getting crud of yer keks (sorry, lint off your trousers) and it picked up all the cat hairs and crap that was on the roof v.well.

Apparently BMW dealers use a product called RaggTopp

Autoglym cleaner with their sponge works fine, always after a good vaccuming, i dont like their proofer though, its not very good, i use scotchguard heavy proofer stuff for outside garments, brollys etc.
Comes in a big spray can for about £5 from Robert Dyas, B&Q etc in the UK, Ive been een using it for ages on Porsches and now the Z4, It doesnt discolour etc, A hint would be to open roof slightly, cover the windscreen/windows with some newspaper and spray as directed, obviously best done on a calm day.

I used ragtop the other day. Seemed good but no idea really i as i have nothing to compare it with.

A lot of dirt came of with the cleaning product (the sponge tool they give you really works well) and once the final spray had been used the crease marks seemed to be a lot less visible.

I use a nail brush to brush the roof, works ok... and AFAIK the BMW dealers use the official BMW roof cleaner (V.good!!), not ragtopp

When I brought my Z home from the stealer it had a number of dirty spots as well as black marks from the rubber trim around the body opening. I used the Ragg Topp cleaner which worked excellent.
Applied the protectant and now all I have to do is brush the dust etc. off with a soft bristle brush (obtained from Roadster Solutions along with the Ragg Topp kit).
I realize that you have much higher humidity there which must make keeping your top (hood) clean quite a challenge. :headbang:

Read somewhere that the BMW Protector was a Raggtop product???

Anyway, hoover away. I hoover my roof whenever I clean the inside and it works a treat. The neighbours think I'm slightly bonkers but hey

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

I consider myself to be quite a practical, common sense applying type of guy but I never thought of hoovering the roof! I'll be getting the Dyson out in the morning to give it a try.

Then I will be off to Halfrauds to buy some AG or Raggtopp.

Thanks again

Simon

A couple of weeks ago I vacuumed the roof and applied the Autoglym protector ... it was fine, but I had to clean parts of the glass with 'Fastglass' cleaner to get the 'run-off' off the windows ... that took longer than treating the roof.

Last weekend when I washed the car I was amazed to see the amount of beeding of the water on the soft-top ... It just stood there like mercury and was easily removed with a cloth.

Seems to work! :) :)

I wonder what happens if you don't treat the roof at all (i.e. just clean and not protect).

There will always be someone who has not done anything to the roof for years who could tell us :D

Well I hadn't done anything to mine for 18 months - but that includes not applying the cleaner, just a quick shampoo when cleaning..

Only I noticed 'wrong' was fold marks which are now mostly gone :D

Another vote for the roller - you get from the pet shop for a couple of quid.

Not sure anyone on here would be willing to find out :P
Well, we sorta won't have to. There's a co-worker of mine that didn't do anything to his, I believe, '98 Boxster top other than wash it. Had no issues other than having to replace the plastic window due to eventual creasing. His material was a little lighter than my '06. I'll continue to protect mine but not sure it's buying me much. I don't get the bead up on the whole top. Maybe need to go through a car wash and get the wax treatment !! j/k. 8)
