Roof again...

Sorry, I know roof problems are done to death on here and I've been searching...

Motor is in the boot for two years (thanks no 5).

The roof operation is intermittent. Started slow and sticky at the start of the season. I spray lubed the hood mechanism and it worked ok.

Now sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it gets stuck. Sometimes the lights don't come on at all. At the moment nothing is working, no lights, nothing. Last night I closed it manually, locked it with Allen key, after which the open mechanism worked enough to unlock it again and then it died... no lights.

Fuses are ok. Red cable goodie in the boot sort of works but requires a lot of force and has no feel to it, could be partially seized? interlock microswith in boot shelf seems to be working ok.

What else should I be looking at? Thanks.

the intermittent loss of lights and slow operation makes me think its power related.
You verified the fuse, but you may still have a bad power (or ground) connection somewhere in that circuit.

The intermittent nature of the fault could point to an issue/break in the loom in the roof itself. I had this sort of thing on mine before I fixed the loom

Could be a break in the loom which runs from the centre of the roof at the front to the passenger side. With the loom bending every time the roof is put down and back up they tend to break over time, the wires are very thin (like telephone wire) and the loom isn’t protected much.
This was the cause of mine, spliced new pieces of wire in.
Drop your roof a third way back then you can access the screws to drop the inner panel to get to the loom.
Not saying it is the cause of your problem but worth a look.
One of my posts way back describes how to drop the inner roof to get to it, if I find time later I’ll have a look for it.

Here’s how to get to the loom.
Sorry if you already know this.

You have to fold roof back so far then there are several screws across the front of the roof and a couple either side which are difficult to see. then fold the panel down and you will see the wiring loom which runs from the middle to the passenger side. You will have to peel the sheathing back to reveal the wires to see which are suspect. You will see were the loom bends when the roof goes up and down (my problem was there).

Below is a piece from a thread on removing the roof panel.

1- First you need to lower the roof just past half way, NOTE if the roofs not down enough you won't see the side screws, I had the engine running as the roof will creep down otherwise.
2- Then remove the cover that hides the part for manually releasing the roof, where the Allen Key goes. Then remove the screw at the back, it will be obvious which one it is.
3- Then remove the 4 little screws at the front of the panel.
4- Then remove the side screws (one on each side) it won't come off without breaking unless you Remove them as I very nearly found out.

The screws are obvious when you peel the roof back. Its just the 2 on the sides which needs 2 people to do because you have to move the roof about a bit to see them, they are only small screws and need to be kept hold of when unscrewed or they drop onto the car floor where the carpet monster eats them.

Yep. Intermittent loss of any life is often a fault in the sensor loom that runs from the hinge up to the latching motor. If the roof ECU doesn't know where the roof is, it will do nothing.

I have changed two of these looms recently and its cured this scenario twice. It takes me about 2.5 hours if all goes well, as I still lift the roof out in order to re-fit the up/down sensors located deep on the passenger side ram.

Russ57's guide above is fairly accurate though I'd say,

Thanks, Gents, and sorry for the late reply. Lot going on here at the moment, but I'll give it a look this weekend.

All working perfectly now. I suspect the issue may be related to the cable and whatever it's connected to. Leaving it alone for now :D
