Road Tax - SORN Question

Situation is this, car is OSRN at present but attending a Z4 meet this Sunday 27th Feb.

Don't really want to tax for February as it will only be used for one day, so this means the earliest I can test is two days before end of month which will be Sunday Morning. I can do it on the internet so no problem there.

Question is how do I stand legally, looking at this extract I think I'm OK.

"I ordered my tax disc online but it has not yet arrived, is it against the law to drive/park my vehicle on the public highway whilst I wait for the disc to arrive?
Since 1 September 2008, you can legally drive or keep your vehicle on the road up to five days from the end of the month without displaying a valid tax disc provided you have made your application online or by telephone before your current vehicle tax/SORN expires."

As long as it is paid for online, i print screen on the confirmation note and display this, and my old bill are happy with that

Sorry I think you're wrong. This means you could drive it from 1 to 5 Mar without displaying the tax disc as long as you have actually paid for the tax. The principle being that you have paid for tax for the period that you are driving it. Not that you can drive it during a period for which you haven't paid the tax. Basically an ANPR check during 1 - 5 Mar would throw up that the car was taxed. Whereas an ANPR check on 27 Feb would throw that the car was not taxed. The trouble is ANPR checks are everywhere these days. I drove down my road (a cul de sac) the other day and there was a police car with ANPR at the end of the road checking all cars driving out of the road. :o

+1 exactly how it works.

You would need to tax it and pay for the whole of February. Given the risk of the vehicle being seized or insurance potentially invalidated its just not worth it IMHO.

That's why I asked, as I want to ensure I am covered.

You have mis quoted me though as what you printed was taken from that legal website, not what I have done.

I will have to tax on Saturday at the post office then :headbang:
 
Actually I think you'll be fine. You can tax a car two days before the end of the month, but Sunday isn't included. I taxed my recent purchase on Saturday Jan 29th for a February start, and although I was expecting to have to quote the DVLA website at them, the folk in Godalming PO knew this was fine. I did have to ring the DVLA before hand to learn that I could do this howver.

Looking at your dates you should be able to tax on Saturday 26th February in exactly the same way. I'm sure a quick call to the DVLA will confirm.
 
I reckon if you have not paid for Feb then its most cetainly not taxed for that month - You probably will "get away with it " but if you do get stopped for any reason you are "failing to display a valid tax disc". If they want to get awkward, what argument will you be able to offer?

and thats the crux of it.

doesn't matter a feck when you buy the disc, the law requires it to be current and displayed.

So whenever you buy it, if you drive the car on Feb 28th prior with a disk that starts Mch 1st, technically you face a fine/points/seizure.

If the scuffers let you off then so be it, but......

In the absence of a tax disk they only have to do a PNC check to confirm if you've paid for the day in question.
 
And, as a real old profit of doom - If your insurance company want to be awkward etc !

All your saving is £22 - 50p or 4 Galls of 98 oct. Hardly worth it for a smug feeling when you pass a bobby is it?
