Road tax increase - nearly double

This may have been posted already, but I've learned today that road tax will increase

Looks like anyone with a 2.5i or more will see a doubling of their road tax:

G 151-160g/km £150 £155 £155
H 161-170g/km £175 £180 £250
I 171-180g/km £205 £210 £300
J 181-200g/km £260 £270 £425
K 201-225g/km £300 £310 £550
L 226-255g/km £415 £430 £750
M Over 256g/km £440 £455 £950

last column is the price we'll be paying at the end of 2010.

2.5i varies I believe it is J band although seen some sites quote that it is K - I suppose it depends on the year.

That's out of date info. The current info is on the DVLA website: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_172916 - the changes to vehicle tax from April 2010 onwards.

What about already registered cars?

From April 2010, already registered higher emitting cars will be charged up to £30 more and lower emitting cars will be charged up to £30 less.

*Band K includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006.

Not sure what group 2.5's (or other Z4's are in) but the 3.0i (231ps) is in band K in the above, so £245 for the next year.
 
Phew......... I was typing up my For sale post after reading the first post.
So to make sure i have this clear. My already registered 2.5i will increase by £30 PA ??
 
does the above mean that a Z4M 2005 model would be paying £245 road tax at the moment? Which is the same as i am currently paying? If so that is great and I may just go down that route! Last of the straight 6 naturally-aspirated engines! :thumbsup:

Yeh, its a disgusting price, its day light robbery.

Choosing to base road tax on CO2 emmisions is a total joke for many reasons.

1. CO2 is irrelivent. CO is a problem though... CO2 is alreayd found in failry high ppm's int he atmosphere, all plant life converts CO2 to oxygen. With the deforestation of our planet we need mroe CO2 to allow more trees to grow. Also, this planet WILL run out of oil in the next 50yrs... once that happens we will nto be emiitting anywhere near as much CO2 and hence it does not matter.

2. My car pollutes less then most. Although my car emmits relatively high kg/km of CO2 I do next to no miles. In the last yr I managed under 4k. This means that my car emmits far less then the cleanest of green cars that does a regular 12k m/yr. We already pay a massive tax based on engine size, engine efficiency and distance travelled in the fuel duty and the VAT payed on the fuel duty. This fuel tax enables fuel guzzlers to be directly taxed. My high road tax is just a con.

Its really disgusting that a government can peddle bullshit to its population like that....

Not sure there are any pre 23-March-2006 Z4Ms? Pretty sure they're all newer than that but would be happily proved wrong.

I noticed that concession recently and it's what got me looking at Vauxhall Monaros - if you buy carefully and get a certain age of car then you could have a 400bhp+ 6.0 V8 for £245/year road tax :D

Z4M is 2006 only?

I had an E46 M3 before this with the same engine and that was in the £245 bracket. Changed to the Z4M and despite the same engine with the same emissions, it's in a different band as it was registered after the cut off, and my road tax doubled.....so if an 05 Z4M existed, yup it would be on the lower band. But would a £200 difference in tax really affect your choice of car? I personally think that's why they set it where they do. They would make it £5000 if they really wanted us to stop driving 'high polluters', but they don't, because then we actually would and that means no revenue.
 
If they really wanted to stop high polluting cars they could just ban the sale of cars with BSFC higher then a certain value being sold in this country.....
 
What is the highest CO2 value that a new BMW delivers at the moment? I thought they were the lowest CO2 value manufacturers.
 
£200 wouldnt but if your going to use it as a weekend car then the figures quoted in the first post of £950 start to add up over years of use. Interesting there is no 2005 sold as I looked this up on google before I posted and quite a few sites quote 2005 Z4M i guess it was when it was announced?

My thoughts were one this early 05/06 would have no warranty so using bmw specialist to service would not impact resale value and give you reasonable servicing costs unlike the dealer which is double if not triple what i currently pay, add that with the reasonable road tax and things start looking good with no increase on what I am already paying apart from fuel and insurance. I am just trying to justify next year selling an already pretty fast car to buy the same car again but of course faster and more refined!.. The more I could save on servicing and roadtax the more goes in the tank haha :rofl:

I'm glad its out of date.

Here's why the system is ridiculous - road tax contributes to road mantanance. having low emission cars pay 0 tax is false economy because they still cause the same wear to the roads. If tomorrow everyone switched to low emission cars and no one would pay the road tax, our roads would be reduced to rubble as there would be no budget to maitain them.

We pay tax when we buy are cars (VAT)
We pay road tax
Some of us pay crazy insurance prices - insurance companies get away with robbery - government wont do anything about it
We then also pay a copious amount of tax on petrol
 
its a known fact were all shafted in england. I keep getting told to move to canada! Must check that out. :driving:

I think their 'average' is pretty good thanks to cars like the 320ed, which does something insane like 3,230MPG and emits 0.4g/KM of C02. Or something. However they do have models like the X6M and X5M for Russians with no taste, so it probably equals out at about average. All firms seem to be working hard to get it down, the current 911 Carerra does 225g/KM, so it's only in Band K (£245). Then there are manufacturers like Aston taking it literally and launching bollocks like the Cygnet (an overpriced Toyota IQ with a nice interior) to bring their 'average' down.

The Ferrari 612 is the worst (best :) )....470g/KM.
 
We are screwed with tax whichever way we go.Motoring is so highly taxed.
You buy a new car - VAT - showroom tax.
You buy RFL annually
Petrol is hugely taxed AND you pay VAT on it
Insurance contains insurance premium tax ( IPT)
Servicing and parts attract VAT

I'm going to enjoy every one of my 6 cylinders whilst I can still can buy and afford petrol and I can still buy a car with a decent engine.We'll all be driving screaming/weeny turbo fours in a few years time,it will be all we're allowed. :( :o :( :headbang:
 
Apologies for getting political here but I hate roadtax, the fact of the matter is that hardly any of the money raised from Road tax is spent on the roads anyway. Anyone who drives a guzzler is already paying more to use their car by having to visit the petrol station more often. The problem with all governments in this country is that they all look at the motorist as a cash cow there to be milked, I would up sticks and leave in a second if i could with the US being my destination of choice.

The interesting thing about the recent elections was the doom and gloom of the economy, now they are in power they are now saying its worse than prevously estimated. I dont know about you guys but with press cuttings all saying the middle income tax payers are going to get hammered in the budget i doesnt make me want to live in this country anymore, infact what they dont realise is that it has always been the middle earners who have been hammer in the past and maybe we're sick of it.

Cost saving suggestions for the government:
Scrap trident replacement, so we lose a seat at the big table big deal we are not an empire anymore = £100Bln?
Stop giving people money to sit around popping sprogs (babies) = £Blns?
Support our troops and bring them home = £Blns?
Scrap some of the pointless quangos we keep hearing about = £Blns?
Stop throwing money at other countries, like the £60Bln we had to give the EU to help Greece etc... = £Blns
Demand that the banks adopt a timetable of installment for paying back what they owe the tax payer. = £Blns?

Other ideas for the Government:
Next time Jaguar, Land Rover or Rover come up for grabs, buy them and make you public sector and armed forces use them (this works for Germany and France).
Invest more in innovation, things like developing renewable energy techniologies then selling it to the rest of the world.
Maybe Britain needs to have industry again rather than relying on the finance sector entirely.
Look for other ways to raise revenue rather than continuing to pick on the soft target motorist.

Sorry for the rant but the way this country is run really frustrates me, the powers that be dont seem to have much of a clue.
 
If the government were serious about energy efficiency then how come they dont ban flueless gas fires on average over 80% inefficient ! its a joke in this country i mean think about it a z4 is lighter than an audi tt yrt we pay more surely the weight of the car affects road wear more than how much gas it pushes out ! makes you sick but they will have to tear my ///M from my lifeless fingers ! :driving: co2 co2 co2 YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Porsche's emissions/efficiency figures are very impressive given the performance of their cars. I think the new Cayenne Turbo does something like 30 miles to the gallon. Whilst I'd rather spend the money elsewhere it's hardly enough to make me change the car! Still love the old z3m coupe though so who knows, a pre 2001 model could be a great move...Finally DON'T MOVE TO RICHMOND - my parking permit is nearly £350 pa as they charge by emissions there too! Total joke - Westminster used to charge £120. I know it sounds like I live in the fanciest areas in London so who cares but it's still a total joke to use CO2 for parking. :thumbsdown:
