For those that haven't seen me on Facebook, hi! I'm the owner of possibly the highest mileage E86 (in the UK, possibly the world?). Its been my daily driver for the last year and I've covered 9,000 (mostly trouble free) of the 242,000 mile total this car has accrued between 3 owners and 17 years.
I've done a good few jobs to it during my ownership, the latest and greatest being a full respray from which I've just got it back. The car is taking a 2 year hiatus from daily use while I save some money, maintain, and modify it before putting it back to work as my daily driver.
During this hiatus I have a few maintenance items planned, cam cover gasket, coils, catch tank install, guibos, and bigger stuff like rear rend rebuild with a freshly powder coated subbie and all new bushes.
More immediately I'm in the process of doing the fabled hydraulic power steering conversion. I've got the Z4MC rack (should have gone for a standard purple tag in retrospect), got the cooling loop required. Need the lines, pump, and intermediate shaft most importantly (could someone point me in the direction of the guy who I've heard mods the intermediate shaft?)
My ultimate goal for this car is for it to be an awesome daily driver with a bit of charm and a good bit of pace. And I do mean a healthy helping of pace.
Currently the car benefits from the eibach pro kit - bilstein b4 setup which I'm pretty happy with and haven't much reason to change. I've replaced the shocks a couple of thousand miles ago and I'm really pleased with them. While I do my hydraulic rack conversion I'm doing the offset control arm bushing mod at the same time with some genuine BMW bushes.
Once I have the chassis where I want it, quick steering, and with a LSD, I'll turn my hand to the engine. I don't know how much involved maintenance she really needs, I need to borescope it and do an oil sample analysis before she goes into the barn and doesn't come out for a bit. But I'm hoping she's pretty tight. She's definitely still a performer, no problems there. But for what I have planned, it may be a little harsh on a 240k engine. Time will tell!
