Road gritters curtail fun :(

Last night in my daily driver I passed a gritting truck covering one of the local roads. Time to hibernate my z4m :(

Does anyone else hibernate their car over winter? Do you sit in it every so often with the engine running so the battery doesnt go flat? Or maybe leave it plugged in to some trickle charger? If its permanently plugged in do you just have a power extension hanging out the window of your house? Maybe I need to install an outdoors wall socket.

I think quite a few people with Z4s have those posh things called garages. :D

I could not imagine living anywhere without at least a double garage anymore, especially with a 'toy' car. I would like another house in the sticks with barns, but the wife won't let me! :x

Yep, it's that time of year, gritter has been up my road twice in two days (seems to be spreading invisible grit!), the Z is living it's garage and trickle charger existence, I'll have to content myself whizzing about in the other half's Toyota Aygo X, no auto, no heated seats / steering wheel, no parking assist, no hud

nope, my fun car (currently a boxster S) lives outside, taxed, all year long.

mostly because theres always a possibility it'll be called in to trackday duties at least a couple of times over the winter, since thats when trackdays are cheapest...

my cars all live outside and are driven all year round. Only my motorcycle is shut away over winter.

Absolutely not, cars are for driving and I don't wish to save it for the next person. Plus roundabouts are so much more fun in winter :D

Yes I've chatted with my wife about that. How, if we ever move, the new place would need at least a double garage and better a barn that could shelter cars and be a workshop.

Hmm, with the talk of driving all year round maybe I should look into a spare set of wheels with winter tyres on.

Absolutely, my M3 was brilliant in the snow with winter tyres and it’s LSD. The Z4m will be good too but I’d recommend all seasons rather than winter tyres

Our cars and van live outside and are used all year round. I have a garage but it is used for a workshop. Z4 goes out almost everyday all year round, no point in owning it if I'm not going to enjoy the car and I do, roof down and heaters on. Love it.

FWIW do not just start and idle the car regularly…that will lead to accelerated corrosion and slugging ….good idea to charge the battery periodically..generally assuming the electrical system is behaving then once per month would be completely acceptable ..no specific need to have constant charge if battery and electrical system are A OK
