'Ring trackday - pics + vids

I've just got back from a brilliant trackday at the ring, thought I'd share some pics and vids.

Bookatrack had managed to secure their first ring day to celebrate 10 years of business so full laps and only 140 cars was too much to turn down. Quiet, dry, insured.

Drove down Sunday and found a suitable song for the de-restricted part of the journey:

The M Coupe is brilliant at speed, it'll cruise at 130 really comfortably and at 150 it still pulls although there wasn't much room for anything else.

On Monday we had a track walk with RSR instructors, just enough time to stop at Aremberg and Karrusell, then sighting laps which the other half drove. It was the first time I'd been in good weather, all other times it had been pissing down and grip was terrible. I was really looking forward to dry laps.

I posted the list of cars there in another thread, but it was something to see them all in the car park. 2 CSL's, 2 458's, 2 430 Scuderias, 2 R8's, loads of Porsches but only 1 Z4m Coupe!

Here's the track before the sighting laps:

This wasn't driven by Herr Rorhl, but it was lovely to see and hear going round:

Here's a one of the early laps, a bit more interesting than my out lap as there's a few more cars. Quality of sound from a £40 camera the size of a chewing gum isn't great and my Heath Robinson mount had a bit too much bonnet but anyway:

On the main straight I saw 160 on the clock (not sure how accurate the speedo is at that speed) which was just shy of the start of the orange light at 7,500 revs in 5th. Couldn't verify wether the 155 limit can be defeated by leaving it in 5th. It was so bumpy that I didn't fancy passing the entrance at high speed to try any higher on the downhill section before turn 13. The beep (if you can make it out) is 145km/h to warn me not to get pinched on the autoroutes.

The car felt great, loads of grip, stable and the noise was so addictive! I've fallen in love with the car again. I had a great drive with an Exige on one lap, he was quicker in slow to medium corners (he had a motorsport wing + diffuser) but I finally got to out horsepower someone up the kesselchen (I've done the ring twice before in a 120bhp Eunos)

I was really glad I got new Vredesteins and a geo done before I went, they gripped brilliantly and took the heat very well (it was 30 celsius most of the day)

A car park full of fezzas, apparently 2 didn't drive home on their own :o

And the viewing area after we finished and a touristenfarhten started:

Hats off to Bookatrack, it was their first day and it went really well. Great driving standards (mostly) only a few people went off and a few hiccups (that were out of their control) aside, the timing of the day went smoothly. I hope this is the first of many they do, it's nice to be able to do a proper track day there and not pay (RMA) through the nose for it.

Oh, and 13.6mpg on the ring, 29 on the way home. Not too shabby I thought.

Awsome ! looks as tho driving the ring is an experiance that will never be forgotten , somthing else to put on my bucket list :D

Nice pics indeed. Looks like your girlfriend is as mad about it as you :)

Fortunately for me yes. She only drove the sighting laps at 3/4 speed behind marshall cars, didn't feel up to full speed laps but she did enjoy passenger-ing with me and a much faster friend in a GT3 911.

I think she caught the bug properly at the Andy Walsh day, finally realised (along with me) how good the car is.

I've got another video of 2 more laps which I might edit together. Unfortunately I filled up the camcorder memory quicker than I thought. 4 laps = 2gb!

Think I did about 12-16 laps in the end.

Great pictures, I do hope it wasn't the 458 that got stacked :o

It's a great experience and it's also pretty easy to do from the UK, no need for a lot of planning. It's about 4-5 hours from Calais, easily doable in a weekend. Go for it!

Apparently so. :( I didn't see it myself but heard that a 430 Scuderia and a 458 were taken to RSR on the back of a truck.

The ones I did see were a 911 (in the video, didn't look that serious) and a S2000 that was serious (both ends bent, looked written off but driver ok)

Only 16 laps in a WHOLE DAY - you could have easily done double that - even with 30 minute brakes between sessions

Anyway, nice to see another Z4M there, and I was sorely tempted with the Bookatrack offer, considering I've been using them for as long as they've been going (and before the Jonny & Marcus Easytrack split).
Did you manage to vmax on the long straight between Döttinher Höhe & Tiergarten (as it would have been completely open for a track day).

I thought your last picture was Karussel for a minute and then realised the spectator area isn't the same, so it must be Brünnchen (or was it a Krünnchen type day?).

I guess it would have been a car only day too, so no need to avoid bikes slowing too much for corners and getting in the way :P

I did a few passenger laps in my friend's GT3, and didn't want to stress the car + tyres too much as it was so hot. It was probably 16, might have been more but yes you could have squeezed in more.

The day only opened at 10am and shut early (4.45) presumably because they were scared of someone coming off and stopping the toursitenfarhten evening session.

The last pic is a panorama that distorts the track a little. It is the large viewing area at Brunchen. I saw a bike go round with a pillion! :o

Along the main straight I saw 160 in fifth, but didn't really want to floor it right past the exit/entrance. Partly to avoid buzzing cars coming on at 50mph and partly because it was so bumpy. It was nicer on the autobahn.

How many revs is start of the orange rev limiter light? I could work out an accurate speed from that and the ratio of 5th.

7500 rpm isn't it ?

I've seen over 160 on the speedo in mine but from what I can gather the limiter kicks in at 270km/h (168mph). Knock about 8mph off that for speedo inaccuracy and I reckon the actual top speed with the limiter will be 160mph (the M's historically have had an unofficially higher limited speed than non-M's). It would be interesting to see what an M could do with no limiter. As you can buy the M-Drivers package which raises (note doesn't remove) the limit to 171mph I reckon flat out it would be 175-178mph.

Great report. If you haven't done just go and enjoy the fantanstic experience BUT don't forget its addicive

I found a more interesting video of a later lap.

It's got the crashed S2000, me screwing up miss-hit-miss, overtaking the Ruf looking Porsche and keeping up with a black CSL (for a bit):

Great review, I'm massively tempted...

What's the general opinion on trackdays, DSC on or off?

Obviously it depends on the driver, but most times I'd say off. I left it on for the first lap or two just to see where the TC was being triggered. I found it massively intrusive, especially coming out of the slow-medium corners.

Once disengaged the car drove a lot more smoothly out of those corners, without loosing traction.

Excellent stuff.......gald to hear you had a great time

I really must make the effort to get the Z4 over there :) perhaps later this year 8)

Last few pictures, promise!

Before I washed it, I took a shot of the makeshift ring sticker:
