As there has been threads on here in the past regarding security cams I thought I would share my experience of the Ring Cam. I've been undecided on a cam for a long time as they seem either of poor quality, hard to set up via wifi or expensive if you want something like cloud storage. I noticed the Ring Company do their cam door bell with speech facility which intrigued me but then spotted they also did a seperate cam on their website which is similar but without the door bell facility. They have a UK website so decided to order one at £159 for the cam and an additional £39.99 for a solar panel to keep the cam charged up. After placing the order I noticed via the tracking info they are actually shipped from China but its only took just over a week to arrive.
To kick off the install you down load their phone App which guides you through setting the cam up and connecting to your wifi which is a doddle. The App is really good from where you can set the cams motion zones, turn it off and on and check its battery status etc and view video captures and use it to zoom the cams lens but only one fixed zoom. Video clips can also be viewed via their online website. The videos are easy to download, share or e-mail etc. When connecting to live feed it can take a little while initially when using 4G on a mobile but once connected seems OK.
The cam and solar panel each come with with all tools needed for installation, masonary drill bit, screws, rawplugs etc. The cam has two types of mount, one a quick release if you need to charge the cam via usb or a more permanent mount which requires a little more effort to remove. A nice touch is the mount has a built in spirit level to help levelling when being installed. The cams body is made of anodised metal and is quite heavy and well made. Once installed you get a notification on your mobile phone each time in senses motion and you can view a live feed etc and also talk to the person captured on the cam via a built in mic. I was sceptical about the solar panel but when mounting the cam it had 55% battery power and after an hour or two it was at 90% so appears to work well. The solar panel and cam are both waterproof however I have the cam positioned under a carport to cover the drive and car etc. Ring say if the cam is stolen they will replace it free of charge so long as you provide a Police crime number. Cloud storage for the videos if you want it is £2.50 a month which I thought was good. My only slight bugbare is I wished the solar panel power cable was white in colour :roll: so will look at getting a length of plastic cable cover in white.

The solar panel looks to work well however the plastic case isn't as well made made and I don't know how it will last long term. Ring say the cam will work for 6 to 12 months with a charge which I find hard to believe to be honest so the solar panel is a must I reckon unless you are happy taking the cam down to charge it.

First couple of days it was picking up nothing even when I adjusted the motion zones through the phone App but still nothing, however its been giving loads of false alerts which is rather annoying. I realised then that I had set the cam pointing too far down to the ground so the motion sensors weren't picking up anything. Ring the manuafacturer say it might take time to get the cams sweet spot :roll: If mounting the cam up high its quite hard to figure out the angle it needs to be set at, maximum motion distance is 30 ft. If you set the view using the live feed to your mobile phone as a guide it doesn't necessarily mean you have the correct angle for the motion sensors. Anyways its now picking up motion at the maximum distance which is roughly to the front of the house so shouldn't be picking up anything on the road etc. However its still giving alot of false motion alerts through the day and night recording 40 sec instances. Ring say that as well as motion it will give alerts when it senses variations in heat sources such a person. Each time I review an alert video there is nothing there, so its starting to be a little frustrating as you don't want loads of false alerts. The only thing I can think of is I've set the cam up under an enclosed car port and wandering if the variation in heat through the day and night is setting it off.
