Ring Door Bell

I’m looking at replacing my old world ding dong wireless door bell with something like the Ring system

There seems to be shed loads of add on accessories and options - I suppose my question is, what do I start with? Ie Essentials v guilding the lily?

I have Alex Echo Dot speakers.
Is a back up video plan essential, screen, chime. etc.

I have installed a few at family, and if you have an existing bell with power (not battery) then that is simple. You have to have WiFi at the door though

The Alexa integration is great as it will show you who is at the door.

Subscription - yes, £30 a year or thereabouts, so it will record what you want. I have mine recording all the time so it records every car passing my drive (needed as often they use my lane to dump)

You can have rechargeable ring door bells if you don’t have any means of getting power there by the way ( eg that the existing bell was not powered)

So I would need the Door unit but do I need the chime unit and an Alexa screen - or can I view through iPhone and chime through the echo dots

Ps sorry if I’m sounding a wee bit dumb!

The door bell unit usually comes with a chime unit, but you don’t ‘need’ the chime but if you are in the garden, nobody in the house hears the bell (unless they all have their phones on them). Alexa tells you there is someone at the door with the image and makes a noise, so depending if you have enough coverage in the house to hear your phone or the Alexa, you might not need the chime.

Any Alexa dot also makes the noise by the way

Would it not be more hygienic to put a portaloo at the top of the lane?

We have just purchased a Tapo wi fi camera for our back garden and well impressed with the quality of the kit for the price.

I am sure they do a similar thing in doorbells.

I don't have their doorbell but have two of the Ring Cameras which are powered from a solar panel. I bought the Chime separately as it also acts as a WiFi extender. Both cameras work fine with my Alexa echo show. I pay an annual subscription for cloud storage as the cameras don't have an SD card option.

I did look at their doorbell but as I don't have power to the doorbell location I skipped it as I found with the cameras the battery doesn't last long hence why they're connected to a solar panel.

All I would say with Ring stuff is ensure the WiFi is good as I've seen alot of complaints of the camera only recording the back of people as their walking away. The chime will act as your WiFi extender if its a problem.

I went in the end with this doorbell as it has anti tamper fixings and an alarm activated through the app if the doorbell is forcibly removed. The battery will last a good 8 months which was also a plus. Also came with its own chime unit. It has an SD card slot and free 48 hour cloud storage, again a plus as these cloud subscriptions add up.

Just think there are better options out there over Ring with the doorbells anyways. The Ring cameras themselves are fairly decent though and been pleased with mine.

Tim.
