Ride quality?

I've run my 2.3i Z4 for 7 months now with the 19" rims it came with and the run-flat tyres.

The only real issue with the car is the terrible ride over crappy West Midlands roads.

Would a change to normal tyres REALY make a noticeable difference in the ride quality or are they all this bad.
I'm off to Switzerland in it for 2 weeks in June and my Skoda superb is looking a good choice...

My 1973 Porsche 911 is miles better ride!

After regular heart stopping harsh bangs and cracked wheels I've never looked back from ditching the run flats. They don't transform the car but they stop the roughness and banging.

This, although transformation is a term I've used to describe it sometimes on an E85 so I imagine its not that different on the newer car.

Would it make a difference ,like night and day. Don't hesitate go for it. There is always a market for used run flats so you should at least get some money back.

I changed mine almost immediately (19 inch wheels).

As you drive away from the tyre place, it will feel like a transformation & you will really notice - but to be honest you soon get used to it.

It takes away a lot of the worst of the harshness, but it never really gets to be 'great'. I would say ride quality improves from 'shocking' to just be 'bad'.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the e89.... but the ride quality was something to be tolerated rather than appreciated.

Have I got this right - The ride quality improves. But what about the handling - is this better or worse?

I come from owning a long line of Alfa's and I find the handling on my M Sport not as positive or sharp, a little soft, and to much over steer. I have been thinking about changing the run flats but I wouldn't want to make the handling any softer or less responsive.

The car is more precise on non-RFT tyres as you'll get less tyre slip, however you'll get more car movement on the tyre so it's a different feeling. This is a good thing as it's suspension & tyres getting on with the job of actually dealing with the bumps.

Fundamentally the Z4 is a GT not a track car, if you want sharp handling talk to someone who races them how to sort out the suspension geometry & prepare for junking the OE suspension.

Excellent Fred back. The car was bought as a GT, I have a classic 911 for the real sports car experience....

Any improvement will be welcome, and pin point handling is not a priority.
This is a high day, long weekend car with the wife, so cruising might be a good term to use. :D

Looks like time to find some replacement tyres.
