Revs changing to good mpg

Havent seen anything in the manual about this, so what revs do you guys change gears to get a nice mpg of out of the Zed? Mine is a 3.0l and is thirsty-ish on short, in traffic, drives, not that im complaining or something..

I change when I need to.

If I'm spirited it is above 6500. If I'm lazy then sub 3000.

MPG is more to do with acceleration rather than revs.

If you reach high revs slowly with a gentle right foot then mpg would be good.

If you change at low re=vs but get there with a heavy foot then mpg will be low.

What I'm saying is mpg is not a revs thing!

I don't think you can give a prescriptive answer to this sort of question. Good MPG comes from a combination of gentle acceleration (as indicated above) getting to the highest gear the engine will comfortably hold in any situation with the least application of throttle and anticipation (reading the road and traffic). I reckon the latter is worth as much as the rest put together as it enables you to hold a more constant speed.

Still probably wasn't the best choice of engine and car if you are really worried about MPG. :o

Given my previous cars and taking into consideration the car and engine - the zed is the best I've had in mpg terms...

maybe I just have a heavy right foot

Hehe, not that i'm worried too much about the mpg, but being new to the car just wanna get the best out of it. I use it 75% for commute to work and the traffic it's not the best around here. My question was based on the experience with the S2k , a rev happy engine, that had an rev interval to drive on higher mpg.

My 2.5i never gave me more than 27-30. if it was minaly motorway driving then maybe 33. hey but i enjoyed it. All that matters is would u get a rush accelrating at the traffic lights or r u one of those who slowly get into 1 and then into 2nd ans move on. I've a Z4MR. i barely get above 20mpg so far but who cares. its great fun. just have to be careful when i accelerate not to go into the boot of the guy in front of me.

An engine is usually most thermally efficient at 2/5 (40%) available power. Note that this ISNT throttle position, probably more like 20% throttle :)

My Advice: Dont accellerate fast OR SLOWLY! Make progress! Anticipate traffic and plan ahead to corner apexes and hill brows. Dont use heated seats or AC, Tyres at 34/36psi, Dont leave ticking over especially on warm-up. I personally shift up at around 2500 on an Eco run as the engine is probably sipping the least (per revolution) at around 2000rpm. ~55mph is the magic speed for mega MPG in most cars; when cruising stay close to this.

If you really wanna go mental, try upping the tyre pressures a few PSI each and next service use 5w30 oil - my car runs silky on the stuff but is very thin so does use ~1l every 4000miles or so.

I usually average 33mpg from a tank of Shell 95, fill to fill with a mixture of city/A/B Roads(Runs best on this!) Had 44 and 46mpg on runs also, again calculated at the pumps but on 250 mile trips to Glasgow and back nailing 65mph :D

What a great engine, who needs a DERV!? Will have to see what it gets at Bedford Autodrome GT in Feb

Does the oil make that much odds Ed? I would be quite keen to run 5w30. Do you notice anymore smoke out the back?

Ciprian, how do you find the comparrison between the Z and the S2000? I had one a while back too, and find the Z much better as an everyday driver.

I find the Zed more comfortable with all the gizmos mine has, more of a modern car. I like the stability of the Zed at higher speeds, the S was very 'tail happy'. The boot seems bigger on the Zed, not that I ever use that much space anyway. Love the growl of the straight 6, no doubt the sounds of the S was nice, but I like this one better. I like the view of the bonnet better on the Zed. Also the build quality in the beemer is better, all the switches are moving like they are brand new.
